Back button focus on a Nikon D7100

I am trying to use the BBF feature on my D7100 and I am not sure that I have chosen the proper settings correctly. The information that I used to set up my BBF came from articles searched on the internet and videos observed via YouTube. However, I am not sure if I have been successful. Does anyone know of a simple, concise written set of instructions on how to set up the 7100 BBF? BTW, why is there a double listing for "Assign AE-L/AF-L button" setting on menu items f4 and g3? I feel that I didn't do something that I should have to get this procedure to work. Thanks ahead of time!

It has been a long time since I set that function up but I got all the info from UTube. As I remember it is a 2 step process. You set up back button focus. Then you have to turn off the shutter button focus. Sorry I could not be more helpful. UTube is your friend.

I hope this helps.

1 - Go to the Auto Focus menu, Go to AF activation, select AF-ON only.

2 - Go to the Controls menu, Go to Assign AE-L/AF/L button, Press OK, choose AF-ON

---------------------

The first actually means the shutter release will not activate the A/F.
A/F will only be activated with the AE-L/AF/L that you used in step 2 to select AF-ON

Thanks, Don, however, the D7100 does not have an "AF Activation" choice. I am totally perplexed as to why there is an "Assign AE-L/AF-L button" setting on both menu choices "f4" and "g3". Seems like I am missing a step.

The G menu is for movies.

This is from D7000 and may be what you need.

1) You need to assign the AE-L, AF-L button (yes, that button that you've never used before and always wondered what it does) on the back of the camera to be AF-On. To do this, go to your camera menu and look in the custom setting menu (the pencil). In the custom setting menu, go to Controls, and then choose F5 “Assign AE-L/AF-L button.” Within this menu, choose “AF-On.”

Check out Steve Perrys website "www.backcountrygallery.com" He has posted a step by step simplistic way to BBF your camera. Steve is also a contributor here on UHH.

I'm glad someone remembers how to do this! My D7100 has been set for BBF since I got it and I no longer have any idea of how I did it!

Go to the I button on the back of your camera push it once and at the bottom second from the right you will see the focus thing come up click on that when it comes up go to AF on click on that and you're in that's your back button Focus will be used then. I have the D7100 and love it and shoot with it everyday still. My back button focus is on right now. I take it off for macro shooting but that's just me. Good luck

I shoot with the D7100 and have used the back button focus feature previously; it works well but I still personally prefer the shutter release button on top of the camera. There are many YouTube videos specific to the D7100 that will quickly show you how to set it up; it’s not hard. I must admit it’s been quite awhile since I used it and I don’t remember how. I need to brush up on it myself. Good luck.
