Rattle in TC-E 14 III, Nikon teleconverter?

I sold one to a fellow hogger. He reports some sort of rattle in the 1.4 X teleconverter. I havent used it in a long time, and don't remember a rattle≥ Do any hoggeers out there have such an issue, or know of one? I will refund his payment if need be, of course.

This has come up before. There is a mechanical linkage which transfers aperture control from the camera body to the lens. When a lens is not mounted, it is free to move. It can rattle when it does so. The rattle is good. It verifies that all operating parts are present and are free to move as required.

What Larry said. I bought a used one from B&H several months ago & freaked out when it rattled. When I stopped in at my local shop, the owner checked it out, chuckled a bit, and said it's "totally normal".

I heard the rattle when the TC1.4 was mounted on a 300 mm f4 lens. I dismounted the TC1.4. The lens did not rattle. The dismounted TC 1.4 rattled with the caps on and with the caps off. Is there any specific test I should do with this combination before getting carried away?

Even with the lens mounted to the TC1.4 and the whole assembly mounted to my D500, I can still hear a very faint rattle. I'm 78 yrs old and hearing impaired but can hear the faint rattle with my hearing aids in and the whole assembly in place on the camera. Still nothing to worry about?

I suspect it is fine. The test is to take a few shots and see if the results are properly exposed.

My Nikon TC 20 III rattles too when not mounted and it is completely normal.

Mine rattles also.
