Every digital camera and probably all film cameras you own do, in fact, have highly capable light meters.
Half press your shutter button on any of these cameras. Note the meter reading in the view finder. Adjust exposure parameters to place the camera's meter between the 0-mark and +1 to the right, based on your personal experience with each camera body. Refer to specific camera manual for more details.

I think one can do incident and reflected light, the other only reflected.
