Back Button Focusing on the Canon R5

I just purchased the Canon R5. I loved back button focus on previous Canon cameras and am setting up the R5 for it. I thought I had it set up correctly, however, when I try to focus, I get a white square that I use as a focus point. However, when I try to set the focus point, I see a number of smaller green squares somewhere around the display. Can I anyone tell me what either I am doing wrong, or some step on back button focus set up that I have missed.

There are so many ways to set the autofocus on the R5 it is really hard to tell how you have it set up. I am not talking about the back button focus but the parameters for your focus area. It all depends what you are shooting and how you want the camera to detect it Use this for a starter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZxF_ADf4eg

You might have it set to face tracking. If you are not photographing a person than your camera is searching for a face. I have face tracking programmed to another button.

How are you used to setting it up? Be sure you picked the same focus point. If you used face recognition you will get the type of reaction you mentioned from the camera. Try a smaller focus area. I did the same thing listening to these gurus. They dont know EVERYTHING. LOL If you want to use face recognition set it up on one of your 3 programmed set up (C1,C2,C3).

You sound like you need David Bush's Canon R5/R6 Guide. He answers many such questions.

Tracy, thank you so much. I'll be moving my "face tracking" button as soon as I get up from my recliner. I'm really glad you posted this.

The block of little squares simply shows you the area you are focusing in. When changing to a different focusing pattern use the joystick to move it to where you want it. Play around with it for practice. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry but this guy talks so fast like he'd double talking. and then you can't follow him when he clicks around the menu cause he does it so fast. I could follow him only because I've done some of it. But when he gets to the focus points I lost him. Again, another guy who thinks you already KNOW what he's talking about. He's a TERRIBLE teacher

I have to say that this video is really worthless. The only thing it will teach you is what you already know. The definition of meaningless as a learning tool.

Apparently the OP doesn't know a lot about the focusing system. You have to start somewhere and go from there. Some people assume too much

Which is why I suggested David Bush's R5/R6 Guide. It is written in plain English and easy to understand. That video explained absolutely nothing.

Some people just don't where to start from. He didn't ask how the clock worked at the time he wanted to know what time it was

It's not knowing how to navigate the menu to get it done that's more of the problem. It would be nice if there were a chart with all of the "Titles" with all of the subtitles below it. That would be a quicker way of finding things than keep scrolling thru them to find what you're lookin for.
