Anyone here have good or bad thoughts on Japanese lens sellers on EBay? Duty and import taxes?

I've bought two lenses from Japanese sellers on eBay with excellent service and results. I did not pay any duty or import taxes (unless they were included in the total price offered).

Bought several lenses from Japan, and there were no import taxes or duties. You will find their lenses in better condition than what you find used in the US. This is because the Japanese are a very clean people, and have respect for the possessions they purchase. Their descriptions are accurate, so do not buy anything that says a "little" haze or fungus. Otherwise you can buy with confidence.

I've bought watches many times with no problems in regards to import taxes. I'm not sure but I may have read that $800 is when import taxes come into play. I've never spent that much.

Great experiences with everything I've bought. Mostly it's been medium format, but I've also purchased several lenses.

As mentioned there is supposedly import duty assessed on amounts exceeding $800. However, I've spent well over that amount in one shot, and have never been charged.

Another thing, is that even using Japan Post, items get to me very quickly, usually within seven days. I've also gotten items in as little as three days when the seller uses UPS, FEDEX, DHL, etc. Japan Post is extremely efficient.

Quality has never been an issue. Sellers' descriptions tend to run very conservative. As an example, I bought a Mamiya 645 Pro TL, including a couple of lenses, backs, etc. When the camera got here it was in what can be called "Mint" to "New-in-box"; seller described it as "Excellent".

Your return options from a US seller are better if there's a problem, but the equipment shipped from Japan tends to be great. But, if searching for a lens still being sold new (Nikon 24mm NIKKOR AF f/2.8D), you probably don't need to go to Japan to find a used copy and get an overall cheaper purchase after shipping / etc.

I've bought several used lenses from sellers in Japan. They were/are in pristine condition. No additional fees. Prompt shipping. The last one came by air, and I got it within a week.

They are by far the best to deal with.

I've ordered 35mm cameras from "Ebay Japan" twice and have been satisfied both times even though the first body had to be returned. Service has been excellent.

Never a problem with anything bought from Japan. Lenses, cameras, music equipment, etc.

My experience has been Japanese items in much better conditions than US bought.

It seems that people in Japan take very good care of their things.
