I bought this camera about 1.5 years ago at B&H, thinking that it would be a great camera.
I have only used it for events. I keep it very secure when not in use, and I take care of it like a baby, and this is applicable to all of my equipment.
About 30 days ago, I started hearing a click-click sound inside. I turned if off, then back on, removed the battery, then it would work for 20 minutes and the clicking sound started again. Then the screen would go black and would only focus on very bright lights. I would restart it, again to 20 minutes of work.
I called sony, they told me to reboot it for 30 seconds and update the software, I did.
The same thing happened again. I am so frustrated.
I called sony again, they will not honor the warranty because it's past the year (just a couple of months).
The first time I called they said they would do an exception and cover it, then when I called again the Filipino lady that answered said that they will not cover it.
She would not give me the number to public relations and she was closed-minded and did not really know anything other than saying no.
I am so frustrated, I paid about 2500.00 for this camera, and now it's a piece of junk.
Please help! Anybody with a similar experience?
I have NEVER had this experience with my CANON cameras!!

The way you describe the symptoms, it is possible that the problem might be something going on with the battery. I know that you probably have spare batteries and that it's probably happening with all of them, but if not, it could be something like a bad cell causing voltage to drop. When you power down, the battery recovers a little, and things are OK for a few minutes.
The clicking sound is worrisome, though. Thar might be a failed focus or stabilization system.
When you spoke to these Sony folks, did you get the name, date, and time you spoke to them?
Are you going to call them again and attempt to resolve the issue?
What do you expect UHH members to provide?

Is there a sony representative in this blog? It's been so frustrating, a 2500.00 lasting a year and a half.
What a piece of crap.
Actually, I can sympathize. Absent some sort of abuse, there should not be a failure of this nature as soon as the warranty expires. But the lack of concern shown by the manufacturer (even if it had been the manufacturer of my favorite brand) is simply not acceptable. It's certainly not a good way to do business in a declining marketplace during aa stressed economic period.
Try writing to the top US executive and post this on Twitter.,etc. Most companies monitor social posts.
Do you have the same problem with different lenses attached?
It might be shutter failure. A while back that camera suffered from the shutter tearing or breaking from clearance issues.. I believe that there is a class action lawsuit that has been filed against Sony for shutter failures with that model. When I researched the complaint, I remember some verbiage that described what you say is happening with your camera.
I did purchase a Sony a7iii last October (before I came across that info). Mine hasn't developed any problems, and I can honestly say the camera is everything I was hoping for, and more. I do check to see if there are any developments with that suit. So far I haven't seen anything. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, it doesn't happen to me.
Follow up on the class action lawsuit, you may benefit from that action........BadDog

If this is the same camera you purchased prior to July 16th 2020 how long was the warranty for?

The clicking and dark screen smells like auto iris trouble. If you have constant preview enabled in the live view menu, see if disabling that relieves the problem.
If this works you very most likely have a lens problem, altho a small chance would still remain that its a body issue. The only way to narrow down that diagnosis is by substituting another lens. Body or lens, something needs repair.
If you have just one lens then you might as well just send both body and lens for repair and let the shop sort it out.
If you purchased the camera with a credit card, many companies (American Express) will double the manufacture’s warranty as a matter of policy. May be worth a call.
