One of the major issue when shooting a group, one of the major issue (not considering lighting) is folks not knowing what to do with their arms...
Men use fig leaves, hands deep in pocket, arm crossed, arms disappearing in the back, anything goes when it comes to men. Women do not even have that many choices comparing to men Only fig leaves and arms hanging uselessly on the side that's it.
So....
Shall we chop arms off?
... The worse I have seen is some 'photographer' having his subjects turned on the side and holding the elbow of the person in front. The resulting visual was horrifying. ...
...do you have a "no smile" plan, too? ;0)

I have a 'pointed toes' next....
Appendice? Indeed? It's hard to know what to say. Is it carelessness looking like ignorance -- or vice versa?
I love it and why I don't like shooting group photos I will usually shoot about 10 to 15 images and then use photoshop to try to get faces and bodies the way they should look. You have to be careful though I forgot to remove a person after I moved hime to another location in the same photo. I got a lot of questions about that shot.

Look at the definition of appendices.
noun. appendage [noun] something which is attached to or part of something larger or more important.
In this case, the term is used to mean useless, embarrassing addition to a body yet, indispensable. So no, not careless, nor ignorance at play.
As photographers, the arm are difficult to deal with when in a group. When doing an individual portrait, on the other hand, they can be used to reflect many moods or enhance a pose. In this case there is still an issue called... Hands, you know those spider like bodies at the end of an arm?

Well, I didn't do that well in English class, but Google seems to think that 'appendices' is a plural of 'appendix,' as in the stuff that comes at the end of a book. The plural of 'appendage' seems to be 'appendages.' Again, just some quick Googling, no real personal expertise.

And I all ways thought that the appendix was a part (vestigial)of the small intestiane
AppendIX is indeed the 'useless part' of the big intestine.
When writing:
"
Appendices are always supplementary to the research paper. As such, your study must be able to stand alone without the appendices, and the paper must contain all information including tables, diagrams, and results necessary to understand the research problem. The key point to remember when including an appendix or appendices is that the information is non-essential; if it were removed, the reader would still be able to comprehend the significance, validity, and implications of your research."
ie: not necessary, unlike references that direct the reader to other sources that support the research.
As a photographer,
arms are appendices that become a critical issue because we do not pay enough attention. They distract, as are appendices in a paper that are not well organized.
Funny how folks get fixated on a word because they do not recognize its intent.
Full disclosure:
I requested the admin to add an 'S' to appendice in the thread title.

It's appendages, not appendices. An appendice is a tube-shaped sac attached to and opening into the lower end of the large intestine in humans and some other mammals or a section or table of additional matter at the end of a book or document.

OH come on, I can’t believe that this discussion ended after only one page. We had so much more to learn about anatomy. This is anatomy class...right?
