Road Trip

My wife and I are taking a road trip from Denver area to St. Augustine, Fla and on to Savannah, GA. She's flying home from there and I'm taking my time driving back. I would greatly appreciate some advice for photography stops on the way back home in Southern Georgia, Central Alabama, Central Mississippi and Central Arkansas. I'm primarily a landscape and wildlife photographer so recommendations for State Parks, Wildlife Reserves and other recommendations, etc. would be greatly appreciated in the next couple of days as we're leaving early Friday morning.

I would take a detour through the Smokey Mountains. Your wife might not see you for weeks.

There are several notable locations near Mountain View, Arkansas (north of Litttle Rock a ways). The Blanchard Springs Caverns are very nice, and the Ozark Cultural Center is quite interesting. The White River also flows through that town and can be scenic (good fishing, too).

If your wildlife photography includes birds, eBird can identify high-potential hotspots.

Jekyll Island, GA out from Savannah is a good place to visit. The Railroad Museum in Savannah is well worth visiting.
Drive north and Visit Charleston, SC. It is only a couple of hours north. It is one of the premier tourist destinations in the US yet it doesn't feel touristy. It is filled with great history, beautiful gardens and plantations, beautiful mansions along the sea-wall, great restaurants etc.

Jekyll Island, GA a must see is their Driftwood beach. Charleston SC is a beautiful city over 300 years old. I love the Smokies, Chattanooga tn. Lookout mountain and Rainbow Falls then very close to Chattanooga is Echota, Ga. don't know much about it except that it was the capital of the Cherokee Nation (Yes I said capital of the Cherokee Nation).

If you ever follow US231 through Alabama, just south of Troy on the east side of the road is a house with a huge rooster sculpture out front. The rooster is made of chrome car bumpers. You'll not see anything like that again. And I think the mailbox by the road is a pig, also made of car bumpers.
Jekyll Island was a disappointment. Nice enough but I expected a former winter playground for the super rich. The Vanderbilt home there was just a big old house, nothing special. Don't expect anything at all like The Breakers or Biltmore.

If you have an iPhone, download the app "Roadside America.com". It will show you nearby attractions and photoops along your route by using the GPS in your phone. I used it on a trip to SD a couple years ago and found several places for photography. Btw, it's free.

In Arkansas, be sure to visit Petit Jean State Park (very close to I -40). Holla Bend NWR is 16 miles west of Petit Jean SP. In Little Rock, Pinnacle Mt. State Park is quite nice, particularly if you want a workout (tip avoid the weekends/its very popular)! I also recommend going up Ark Hwy 23 (known as the 'PIG TRAIL', it is quite curvy), to War Eagle Mill, Ark, a working gristmill, in northwest AR. Google both of these, for ideas. I too, recommend Blanchard Springs, AR, very photogenic. AR Highway 7 to Buffalo River National River, Ponca/Boxley area (Elk, evenings). If you are in northwest Arkansas/southwest Missouri: Dogwood Canyon Nature Park — A 10,000-Acre Ozark Paradise!!! Entrance is in Missouri, but the park crosses into northwest Arkansas. Extremely photogenic!!!

Garvan Woodland Gardens near Hot Springs, Arkansas is a 210 acre photographer's paradise. $15.00 entry fee. Daffodils and forsythia should be blooming now. It may be too early for tulips.
