I am a relative new convert to the Olympus M43 system. I have been a Nikon user since my teenage years many, many years ago. My most recent Nikon cameras are the 850 and 500 and am so far still in possession of them. I've been slowly selling off the Nikon lenses which I have somewhat duplicated with the Olympus system. The new OM-1 is on preorder.

My question to all the HH is why do you think Olympus or OM System cameras are rarely listed in most "best of.."
cameras or lens systems? I have been very happy with my Olympus OM-E1-Mark 3 and I primarily do wildlife and landscape/abandoned. The entire system, other than the pro 150-400mm lens, is a pleasure for their weight. I can use the camera for hours without tiring. I find that frequently people snub this system --which I am taking a risk and assuming pertains to the Lumix GH M43 systems as well. Once you learn the Olympus system--and there is a learning curve--
the images are great. I can produce large size photos and the camera is only 20MP. I look forward to all the advancements the OM-1 promises to be.

So-please explain to me (in a nice manner) why photographers seem to feel other systems are far superior to Olympus.
TIA for the input.

If hands-on experience isn't an option, most people will resort to checking the performance figures and the reviews. The simple fact is, the performance figures will confirm the assumption that the small sensor gives lower dynamic range and poorer low light-high ISO performance.

I went the Panasonic M43 route. When I did it, Lumix had a little advantage for video shooters.

You or I will never get the admiration or respect of die hard Nikanon "full framers". It just won't happen. Nor do I worry about.

I know you asked for “in a nice manner” and do believe me when I say I’m doing my best in that, but .....

M43 may be great (it is great), but in a competitive male dominated “best of” scene, there’s always the overriding male principle of “Bigger is Better”. Clearly, if something cannot be “better” then it can never be “best”.

With m43, even the price tags are small. The OM-1 somewhat addresses that, but as a flagship model, it really lacks the prestige of true Big Boy pricing.

Hope my niceness was sufficient. I admit it’s not my strong suit.

I don't worry--am just curious. There are so many experienced, kind, individuals here, I thought I would obtain their take and educated opinions on this perception of M43 being so inferior.

As a retired industrial engineer and safety professional, I'll tell you that I learned a long time ago that people tend to poo-poo what they don't understand...like the need to wear hearing protection in noisy environments. I also learned that it is very important to use the tools that allow you to best do the job you are undertaking in order to get the best results.

I am, fortunately, still able to use my Nikon equipment to do photography. There may come a time when I'm no longer able (or willing) to do that. At that time, it'll really come down to three choices: change my equipment, change my subjects, or quit. Right now, I won't predict which of those choices I'll make. If I change equipment or quit, a very good friend who's a very good artist will receive some very nice equipment. Otherwise, she will have to wait until something more serious happens to me.

I think what I'm suggesting is that what you are experiencing is pretty much standard operating procedure, especially among guys.

You can find lots of discussion of the micro 4/3 systems on other boards. However there are many more photographers using Sony, Canon and even Nikon, so don't expect those photographers to be writing about the latest developments in the micro 4/3 systems (on Flickr, more photos are posted with these cameras than the micro 4/3, see below). As a retired Audiologist, I can absolutely understand your comment about what people do or not do based on understanding i.e. like using proper fitting hearing aids.

Thanks for your wise words.

Have to give credit to Olympus for making the largest M4/3 camera.

I assume you are talking about the E-M1X. AT 2.2 pounds, sure has my D500 beat (1.9 pounds).

I have been using Olympus M43 system since around the year 2001. I have no regrets although at times I have to use a noise reduction program with the old cameras.
Interesting to me is the fact that we do not see many Olympus bodies or lenses for sale in the second hand market.

Hi Photoladybon,

I don't care all that much about other opinions. "Sort of." Ultimately the results I get are what matters.

I have been using M43 since Panasonic introduced the Panasonic G1 in 2008. I have several M43 cameras for various types of work. I use a handful of Panasonic GX series cameras for street photography and a G9 for photographing my paintings. The G9 in Hi-RES mode coupled with excellent glass produces outstanding large sharp files.

For me, this works exceptionally well. I hope this helps.

Best,
Peter
