An interesting shot. I hope you don't mind but I thought the highlights were overexposed. I used my PSE to just darken the highlights and lightened the stairs just a little. It's hard to get a shot when part is in shade and part in sun and you did a good job despite these difficult circumstances. You might want to try shooting with the brightest part of a photo being where you set your exposure to. And if you want you could set one that way, one exposed to the darker area and one set between. Any way, here is what I did just as an example for you of what I am thinking.

Composition is very nice - I would like to see this image printed in black & white, deepest shadow falling in zone IV, and the highlight areas in VII. I am new to digital equipment, so the how to do's I have no clue. It's a great shot - thanks for sharing with us
