Also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy.
23.16 million light years from Earth and contains over 100 billion stars and countless number of planets.
Imaged with a 5 inch refractor and a CCD camera.
100 BILLION stars! And if even 1/2 of them have planets that's... a lot!!!!!
Great photo, I thought maybe it was called The Snail Galaxy!
Great photo. Mahalo for sharing.
Fascinating photo! I'm currently reading Why The Universe Is The Way It Is, by Dr. Hugh Ross. The science is mind-boggling. Of note, he points out the "inventory" that makes up the universe, given as percentages of cosmic density:
Dark energy (self-stretching property of the cosmic space surface): 72.1%
Exotic dark matter (particles that weakly interact with ordinary matter particles and light): 23.3%
Ordinary dark matter (particles that strongly interact with light): 4.35%
Ordinary bright matter (stars and star remnants): 0.27%
Planets (a subset of ordinary dark matter): 0.0001%
These staggering numbers, and many presented in the book, indicate how vast and seemingly incomprehensible the universe is! And that your photo reveals only a tiny fraction of visible property.

Looks a bit more interesting than the "Whirlpool" we have in the laundry room!!! Thanks for a wonderful image of something so fascinating.
