An automobile transport ship caught fire off the coast of Portugal. It is carrying almost 4,000 cars, including Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bently. What a financial mess! "NH resident Joshua Vavra and his wife, Lyndsey, have been waiting since November for his $65,000 Porsche."

I guess the slogan, "buy American" might come in handy now.

And those 4,000 cars are carrying 4,000 big lithium batteries. It's still unknown if a battery started the fire of if something else was the cause but either way, burning lithium batteries put out lots of toxic fumes and can only be extinguished with CO2, foam or by complete submersion in water...which just might happen!

$65,000. That must have been for the wheels and tires.

Why would we think they are all electric or hybrids? Probably a small percentage. But I certainly agree LI Ion fires are a bitch to extinguish (personal experience), and since they produce their own oxidizer, CO2 is not especially effective. They could easily lose the ship.

That's kind of a leap. Did you have access to the ship's manifest? How did you determine that all 4000 vehicles were battery-powered?

You and TriX are right; I stand corrected. An article I read noted the problems firefighters will face putting out burning lithium car batteries on the ship but it didn't say how many cars are battery-electric.

That's why he's been waiting since November. They don't make many bare bones Porsches. : )

And off the coast of Alaska, you have this, a ghost ship carrying 5000 Mazdas abandoned by crew and adrift.

See da link: https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a12109/ghost-ship-full-of-mazdas-floats-free-off-alaska/

Seems to be a bad time for sea transport of automobiles.
