I just bought a Canon 40D and would appreciate some suggestions on how to improve on the shots I took of the gator.

Try to get closer and use a circular polarising filter.

Nice shots! They look pretty good to me for your first set. You wouldn't be able to see much in my shots. I'd be farther away.:):)

Pardon me for hijacking your post Erv, but I agree. Distance in this case is a good thing. Very nice shots Sandy!

Very nice, you did well. I did notice that the time is off on your camera, by 12 hours I think. I would guess these were shot about noon from where the sun appears to be. Never mind, seems you corrected it on the third photo.

I would also suggest doing a tighter crop on the first photo and try to shoot early morning or in the evening. The best filter, if you choose to use one, would be a good CPL.

Enjoy your new camera. 40Ds are nice.

Thank you for your advice and comments. The pictures were shot about 12:30 and I just bought a Sunpak filter set, yesterday per the advice from Leicaflex . I also, thought the first photo needed to be cropped off the bottom, however I tried to leave the photos untouched until I seeked advice from the pros here at UHH!!!! Thanks again, Everyone!!!!!
