When you goof, do you have a backup?

The other day when I left work and climbed into my car this image was right in front of the car. I grabbed the small pocket camera that is always within reach to photograph this most interesting ice melt. No SD card! At least I was able to pull out my trusty i-phone and capture this, knowing it would only be a matter of an hour or so, or maybe less before it disappeared.

I tend to check my equipment before leaving the house with it.

I do when I take equipment out, but this is a camera I never take out, out of the car that is. I had taken some shots with it at some point and just taken the SD card inside to download. When I do this I usually put the SD card in a card wallet I keep in a front pocket but didn't that time. I think as a matter of course, I will put a blank card in that wallet and keep it for just such a situation or in case I get really carried away out shooting sometime and need more ammunition.

My cameras are stowed with a card in them.

I leave the door of the SD card compartment of my cameras open when I take the cards out to offload pictures. There is no way I would pick up and take a camera out without noticing this. This has and will never happen to me. I also leave the battery compartment open after taking out a battery to charge it. Having said that, that's a great picture.

You're lucky. I usually find that out only after driving to the place, loading up my backpack, hiking and hour and setting up my tripod.

I hope you have a good dust abatement program!

I haven't had a problem so far. I can see your point. I'm more paranoid about getting dust on a sensor and dealing with that. So far that's been good as well, and I do change lenses a lot.
