Just got back myself two weeks ago from a Canada and New England cruise. I enjoyed this one so much I might do it again. But not before my next one that is in the planning stage (Panama Canal).

This is part of what you see when down in Panama. We did this about 4 years ago. It was a Great trip. Second photo is of a ship in the canal, can't get panoramic photo with my camera.. The Mule is to keep the ships from scraping the sides. Living in Wisconsin we take our vacations in the winters..

I'm up in the air about Cruises. All my friends have done them and and don't come back ranting and raving about them. I have traveled in my RV for over 30 years and I know I enjoy the freedom and photographic possibilities of that, maybe someday something will catch my eye .

I suggest the "Mule" is for controlling the movement of the ships through the locks, rather than keeping them from scraping the sides. Ships do not use their own power going through the locks.

You should give one a try. I was dragged on one by my wife and sons. I'm a dry-lander don't like boats or water deeper than I am tall. I didn't want to go! I had the time of my life. Cant wait to go back to the Carribean on another cruise.

Yes, I've been completely through, from Atlantic to Pacific, on a Navy ship, and through the first set of locks and back on a cruise ship. Quite often, there are "mules" on both sides of the locks and near the front and back of each ship. The name "Mule" came from their activity in pulling forward and holding back a ship to insure the canal isn't damaged and to provide better motion control than a ship would have. Remember a ships design is such that it takes a good while to get up to speed and a good while to stop forward motion-something totally out of context to the stop and start of the canal. SORRY - probably more than you needed or wanted.

something for you to think about---we went with a group of 18 people on a cruise tour to Alaska. It was awesome, my husband is not a cruise fan, but he had a great time. 7 days on the ship and 5 days by bus and train on land.We saw so much beauty, and had plenty of time for picture taking

I'm almost green with envy. An Alaskan cruise and ground trip in on my bucket list; however, my wife of 47 years, whom I love greatly, detests the cold and has yet to be talked into going. Maybe next year!

Be sure and share pictures of your trip.
