NCSU 2/4 Wrestling With the Z9

Tried photographing something different - wrestling. Oddly enough, while the action wasn't as fast, trying to focus upon a particular wrestler's face when his opponent's was so close presented a challenge as did anticipating action. I think I would enjoy watching the sport more than photographing it, but last night was the only match for which I could get credentials. Just as well.

My settings were:

Focus Mode: AF-C, Sport VR,
Focus Area: 3d tracking, medium dynamic, wide area large
Focus Lock: erratic, 5
Aperture: f4.5
Shutter: 1/400
ISO: 2500 focus lock 5/erratic.

Now for most images, the 3D option worked great. However, coming directly at me, not so much, focusing upon the background. I lost a couple of series I would have liked to have captured. I do know other cameras sometimes have trouble with the subjects coming directly at them, but I guess I was surprised for these failures. For comparably "fast" action the 3D option worked fine. So next efforts will try either of the wide area modes or possibly the dynamic mode (as found in DSLRs).

So I am trying other settings including medium dynamic and actually turning off subject identification. Hopefully that will work.

But all of that said, here are images from the match.

I like the set. The good thing about your Z9, you only can get better and I'm sure there are already info out on the various focus tracking methods for your new beast. Thanks for sharing all the info.
