Interesting article. And, great discovery! I wonder if this applies to all lens hoods, like the ‘tulip-shaped’ hood on most zooms. Or, if the phenomena is limited to the ‘can-type’ hoods used on big zooms (ie 150-600) or big prime lenses. Perhaps Steve can comment on that for us. Certainly something to keep in mind!

Both my wife & I have had that problem here in Central Florida when we were in & out of our vehicle. It was in the 30's - 40's. We didn't know why our photos were soft. Maybe this is the culprit. We will experiment to see if that's the problem.
