The one on the right was made in the 40s. I purchased it in 1969. The other was produced and purchased more recently and is used almost exclusively now. Oh, I still use mirrored cameras, that is what was used to produce this photo.

And a great photo it is too Bob.

May I ask what tripod you are using. I have not seen one like that, R. No 4.

Thanks, Dennis.

It's a Gitzo. the R. No. 4 is the model of the head.

I actually started off with a mirror in the early 1950s - with a Brownie Hawkeye and 620 film.

But I quickly saw the error of my ways and went mirrorless in 1956 with a 35mm Retina II (Kodak Ektar 47mm/2.0) when I first went to summer camp in Colorado, and a few years later a Leica IIIc (Summitar 50mm/2.0) which I kept for 40 more years.

I stayed mirrorless until I succumbed to the call of the SLR and got an Olympus Pen FT in 1969.

I have and use a Leica and Retina. Technically, the Retina and Leica have mirrors. They are used for focusing.

I wish I remembered what camera I borrowed from a friend circa 1970 that started me in this hobby.
It might have been a Leica. It was a rangefinder.

I started out with mirrorless using my father's camera a Petri 7s fixed lens rangefinder in the 60's. I was 10 year old then but my father kept telling how he wish he could afford a single lens reflex camera. So when I bought my own camera about a dozen years later I got myself a Nikon F2AS a camera with mirror. I use camera with mirror ever since and I don't think I want to go back to mirrorless

Interesting.

I had a 4x5 once. I loaned it to my brother who had it for so long that he forgot where he got it. And traded it in for another camera. I didn’t really care because I wasn’t going to use it. Now I wish I had it back.

Cool cameras Bob. I only wish I was talented enough to use them properly.

Thanks. You are just as talented as anyone who uses these. It's a matter of practice and a strong will to not get disappointed with results from time to time. Eventually, the number of "keepers" when using one is close to 100%.
