Great set of images. I've heard these are very intelligent birds and can become somewhat tame around people.

Thank you, Ballard. I have never witnessed a tame one, but it is very enlightening from other posts to find out others have.

The Greater Roadrunner exists throughout the U.S. Desert Southwest and more recently into Kansas, Missouri and Louisiana. Its cousin, the Lesser Roadrunner, exists only in Mexico and Central America.

Roadrunner wing feathers can show subtle iridescent greens and the head crest feathers are a beautiful bluish black. During breeding season, their facial skin around the eyes can show a patriotic orangish-red, white and blue. But one of their most interesting features to me is their long eyelashes.

All images were shot for a photo contest last year on my hunting lease near Laredo, Texas.

Enjoy.

You've got it right! SOMEWHAT TAME. One time and only one time I held a roadrunner in my hand. It was just an immature one which had gone into our bedroom and kept clacking to get out. It was confused so my wife went over and picked it up saying, "You cannot believe what I have!", showing me the roadrunner. I calmly asked her to take it outside where there would be more light rot get a better photo. Outside I released my hands to get a better look for a shot and it immediately, but casually without alarm flapped it's wings to glide to the ground.

I have had them on my knees, on my shoulders on top of my head and just look at me, BUT NEVER have my hands on them!!! except this one time. And only ONCE have seen one get the ax! A Copper's Hawk was hiding in a short sumac tree. We have just removed another tree and some other shrubs not thinking of wildlife. Roadrunners no longer have a place to dodge into from predators and this hawk swooped down and there was only a pile of feathers left. My wife saw the Cooper's hawk fly up and away with the roadrunner in it's beak and claws!

Great set! Loved watching them run, work the bush and generally enjoy themselves, it seemed. Stationed at Holloman AFB N.M.
Thanx for sharing!

My wife and I love Roadrunners! If you don't see them in the winter for about a month it's because of their unusual hibernation. They can go into hibernation and out of hibernation in a short time. Roadrunners need calcium, so I advise everyone to NOT feed them unless you add calcium to the food. We normally offer them their favorite food-hamburger-with calcium added. Calcium is necessary so their chicks don't get Ricketts. We go to the pet shops and get real cuttlebone and grind it, then add it to the hamburger. Their is a cuttlebone-type we never buy. It's hard like Plaster of Paris. Only buy the real cuttlebone.

Our roadrunners are as tame as any wild thing can be. They come into our house because that's where the food is. They sit on our knee and on our shoulders. But remember to always guard your eyes. And remember you can never touch them. They are wild birds. They are the rulers. They look at us as their entertainment.

Your photos are wonderful! I would like to get them in the grassy areas like you do, however we are in the CA desert. More people should show their photos of them often.

One of our friends quickly tried to grab one and I rapidly reprimanded him because we never harass them because we want to keep them here. We had a Cooper's Hawk up in a tree wasting for a roadrunner to nee below and rapidly came stairght down. End of the roadrunner! None of them came back for a couple months. When one day one returned, enjoyed hamburger then left. We've been waiting for the weather to warm to see if we will have roadrunners again.

In the last month they are just starting to return, spookily but still returning! It's nesting time and now come back nearly 3X/day. This time it's 'for the birds', young ones! So they come quickly & leave quickly. But they at least return.

I like the mockingbirds, but when a roadrunner is near I chase the mockingbirds away so the roadrunners will know we support them. Roadrunners kill the mockingbirds young for their meal. That's why they hate the roadrunners.

Roadrunners also are notorious snake killers because the snake kill their young. It's a vicious world in the wild-kill or be killed! Kinda' like living in the 'bad part of town'!
