Z9 size and weight

I've been asked a few times about the size and weight of the Z9 compared to other Z cameras. I can only compare it to my Z7 with the battery pack. The Z7 with the battery pack and two batteries is almost exactly the same dimensions as the Z9, but it is lighter than the Z9.
Compared to D800/D850? With the battery grips installed the D's are definitely heavier and much larger in all dimensions.
Also, the FTZ fits just fine on the Z9 and clears the battery compartment with ease.

They’re all too big and heavy for my liking!

Thanks for the info and photo! It’s easy to compare when placed side-by-side. I’d like to step up, but am undecided as to staying DSLR or going mirrorless. Retirement has me recognizing that if I upgrade, it will likely be my last upgrade.

Love the size and weight of the Z9 because I put manly 200-600mm, 400mm 2.8, and 600mm f4 lenses on it. Fits my manly hands well too. And the camera better balances those big boy lenses also.

I prefer the added heft and grip when shooting with heavier glass. I’ve never cared for the mirrorless systems. That is why I went with the D780. It’s a combination of DSLR and the Z-6 mirrorless. I’m really liking it.

I use d810 and D850’s, exclusively with battery grips. I find the weight and size are perfect for me, and I only weigh 155 pounds.
I have been using grips and/or motor drives, since the F2. The balance, especially when shooting in portrait mode, is greatly enhanced. Because with the second set of controls, you are holding the camera properly, without your arm all the way out from your body.

And it helps me, when using any lens from my 70-200 f2.8 fl-e on up.

I would not consider shooting without one.
MT, Thanks for the size comparison photo.

Youre more than welcome.
I also use grips on all my cameras, for many reasons, started with my F3 HP and never quit.

Please note that, the D body on the left has an arca plate on the bottom and a strap on the top, both of which make it look a little larger than it is. But, it is still larger than the others, but not quite as much as it appears here.
And, MT, are you saying that the original ftz, not just the ftz2 is compatible with the zed9?? That is good to know.
I was under the impression that the ftz2 was introduced because the inbuilt grip on the zed9 was in the way of the first ftz version.
Thanks again for the photo and your experience/knowledge

Yes, original FTZ works perfectly. Also notice the strap ends and Arca plate on the Z7. I have no yet mounted a strap or plate to the Z9, but that actually will happen today.

MT, thanks for the speedy reply.
I am surprised that the ftz fits, because I was under the impression that Nikon had to release the ftz2, because the first model didn’t fit or work, on the 9.
But, I trust that you are correct, because you know what you are doing!!!

The FTZ fits the Z9 but leaves little room for the fingers when using the vertical grip and shooting in portrait orientation. As such, Nikon released the FTZ II which does not have the tripod bump on the bottom and leaves ample room for the fingers in vertical use on the Z9.

So, the FTZ DOES work on the Z9, it just isn't ideal when trying to shoot vertically.

Thank you so much,
for your decisive answer.
As a devout grip user,
this is a really important factor.
Much appreciated.
And to all my fellow ‘togs,
Wishing you all a
happy, healthy and safe new year.
(We deserve a break!)

Nice comparison. Thanks.
I just received my Z6ii last week and like the size without the verticle grip. I am going to use it for night-time street photography in Chicago. I will add the verticle grip later.

Thank you for posting a comparison photo. As someone who abruptly found out in 2021 that he’s human and getting older like everyone else, I find myself migrating towards lighter equipment for the future. I’ll most likely be getting rid of the D800 and D810 (both with grips) and get another Z6 (and probably its battery grip). Have a happy and healthy 2022.
