I have a Nikon d850 with a pf500mm I use for BIF. I find the acquisition focusing speed is slower than what I would like. Does anyone know if I switched to a Sony FE mirrorless 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 G master OSS if it would be faster focusing? Most likely I would use a t/c. I know about other benefits of mirrorless, and weight is of utmost importance to me as well as quality, yet i would like a faster acquisition rate. It is a big investment to switch and I want to make the right decision. Any thoughts?

You likely need to work on your technique. The D850 is one of the fastest, most accurate focusing cameras available.

Not sure going from a prime 500mm F5.6 to a zoom 100-400 with a T/C would bring about better results.

MT Shooter probably gave you the best advice you will get.

Thank you for your speedy response! Although eye-tracking is appealing, I don't want to spend money on new gear if I don't have a faster focus acquisition rate.

You're welcome. I have a Z7 mirrorless, and just got a Z9 mirrorless whose battery is just now charging. But my D850 is still my wildlife workhorse. I also use the 500mm F5.6 PF and love that lens.
Good luck!

You're quite welcome. I should have mentioned that I also own the D850 and 500mm F/5.6 PF.

That makes three of us, but I'm sure there are many, many more.

You have the vertical grip with nikon big battery ?18 something on it. 7 frames per second without vs 9 frames with the v-grip & bigger battery. Are you taliking about purchasing a Sony camera as well? If so, then one of the A9 models or A1 is what you will most likely want. Might as well get a Nikon Z9 with the FTZII adapter.

If you are using a teleconverter on a 500 of yes the focus speed will be poor. Remove the teleconverter and check it out.

No. Don't have the grip. Was thinking about the Z9 but it is heavier than what I have now and I don't need the video. I was thinking about the Sony A1 as it is lighter

I have a d850 and Tam 150-600. I've tried the teleconverter for BIF and it slows down focusing by a lot. Mybe I don't have the right technique...There are many other situations that will cause slower acquisition...sky, light, foreground, background speed of BIF...but the 850 will focus and fire as fast as I've ever needed.

I had the Nikon 800e w/70-200 f2.8. Now using the A7R4 w/100-400, also with doubler. My feeling is that the Sony is slightly faster, and is not significantly slowed down by adding the 2x extender. The quality of the lens is amazing, and I have yet to see any significant image degradation using the extender, in contrast to adding the 1.7x extender to the 70-200, which added significant CA at the edges.

Beyond that, there are great advantages to going mirrorless which you should consider. IBIS in concert with the ILIS of the lens is truly wonderful. I have never regretted for a moment going mirrorless.

Also worth considering that mirrorless does not suffer from AF misalignment in off-center targets. My 800e was miserable in that regard with some lenses.

Since it is a big investment, I would suggest renting for a few days.
