Canon DSLRs have the suffix D for digital (1D, 5D, 7D, etc.)

What does the prefix R in the R series stand for (R, RP, R3, R5, etc.)?

Just curious.

Mirrorless digital full-frame cameras, at least so far.

Yes, but why the R?

Why not build on the M series?

The EOS-M series are cropped sensor bodies and corresponding lenses, with little popularity outside Japan. Not the platform to remain the #1 worldwide leader in photography.

What makes you believe the D in the model designation actually stands for anything, other than part of the model designation. What does the G in Canon G1X or any other G series Canon digital camera stand for? And, if DSLR'S are called DSLR'S, why do so many people refer to MILC'S as simply mirrorless? None of my bridge or super zooms have a mirror in them, which makes them "mirrorless", yet they aren't referred to as mirrorless cameras!

By the way, the R is taken from the first letter in "Reimagine Optical Excellence".

Oh, good is that the final correct answer? Thanks for answering it. Even I a non-canon user was curious. I think at one time I knew what the "K" in most Pentax models meant. Both for digital and film. I believe before the Spotmatic there were S-Pentax cameras. And after the film K series, L, M, P. Again not sure why K again for their digitals. The "Asahi" and "Tukumar" names were for people important to the president of the company at the time. I am sure Nikon has interesting stories for their camera names too. During my camera years, F for film and D for digital DSLR. But I know before the 1959 F there were different Nikon names.

I think Pentax went back to K after a number of IST-Dxx cameras that were very confusing.

Yes, I know that but I skipped over that because I found it confusing too and never owned any of those models. I have had or do have a Spotmatic (early '70s 1/1000 sec), KM, K2, K1000 SE, K1000, ME, ME Super; K-100D converted to IR, K-20D, K-5, K-3.

May be mini because the M series is the smallest interchangeable lens cameras Canon made.
