On Monday I do in for a hip replacement. It is being performed by OrthoArizona and one of their top rated surgeons. Have any of you UHH members had this done recently, and if so what was your experience?

I have had both hips replaced and it has been very successful. I am very pleased with the results. When I had mine done, the surgeon used the traditional side cutting method. The front cutting method supposedly decreases the rehab time. My surgeon was aware of the newer approach but just felt more comfortable doing it the way he had been trained. Now, this was a few years back & not recently as you ask, but it shows that you can expect the results to work for quite a while. The "newer" method may be more mainstream by now... The rehab is no fun but well worth the long term benefits in my opinion.

Not personally but I have a friend who recently had hip surgery. This followed knee surgery which aggravated the hip. They did remarkably well. The only thing they complained about was balance. That seems to be an issue of the past as well.

I wish you well and a speedy recovery. Happy New Year, David.

Nov 2019. About 1 month of rehab. Overnight stay. I walked up the stairs to the 3rd floor the next day with a cain & the railing. Just work hard at rehab & you will be all right. One thing I can't do is run anymore. No one told me that before the operation. It was my right hip & my leg just doesn't have that motion to move my leg forward in the running motion. I have no problem riding my bicycle but notice it a little when standing on the pedals going up hills. They went in from the back & heard when they go in from the front, you leave the hospital the same day. Key is to stay active after words. I notice when I put on pants in the standing position, I can't support myself as easy when standing on my right leg to put my left leg in. But I have been just hanging around & slacking on the exercise thing. I need to get back out & hoping to start off with some day hikes. I'm not sure I will be able to do any aggressive climbing if I need to use my right leg up first to lift my body up. Maybe if I can get it in shape a little at a time. If you are expecting to hike or run, talk to your surgeon before the op. Good luck.

Total of 4 THRs. (2 on the left and 2 on the right.) Still awaiting the 5th right now as the 2nd right one still has not taken after 4 years.

Had my right hip replaced 5 years ago and it's been fine. Make sure you go to PT for a while and then do the exercises at home. There's a tendon that goes over the hip that can be sore and needs stretching.

Had my left hip replaced quite a few years ago - the doctor's diagnosis after viewing the X-rays was "Yup, it's trashed". Went to rehab but found that walking (a lot) worked best for me. I also bought a Fitbit so I could track daily number of steps, and I still use it.

I had my hip replaced last year in December. My rehab was to WALK! I started walking every hour or so in the house. From there I walked outside and then longer distances. Some doctors want a rehab setting, mine just wanted me to walk.

The pain was minimal or at least a lot less than what I had before the operation.

They had me walking 2-3 hours after the surgery. We walked around the nurse's station. The nurse said time to go back to the room. I asked if I could walk one more time around the station as it was nice to walk without extreme pain.

Had mine replaced here in Florida.

Like Dragonphile, I've had both hips replaced. And, as he suggested, physical therapy isn't fun but very worthwhile in the long run.

My good lady had the operation a few years ago---at about the time one of our neighbours had the same operation by the same surgeon. My wife diligently followed the post-op instructions, which were really painful, but she stuck with it. Our neighbour didn't. Result: My wife is walking better than she has done for years, but the neighbour is still struggling to walk anywhere without a stick.
