I was browsing through Amazon last night, and I came upon mouse pads. So many of them were solid black. I thought the mouse needed different views to know where it was. How can al all-black surface provide that information? Right now, I'm using an all-brown desk pad, and the mouse works fine. Why?

Reflections of the laser LED detected off the "not completely smooth" mouse pad.
It works on a desk because it can discern the grain.
White paper works also.

Jerry, it's probably the texture of the surface rather than the color.

Where did you hear about needing patterns? I have gotten them to work with a piece of white foam core. I guess we all need to know more about the engineering to understand it.

The optical mice use a low power laser LED.
The image is of my mouse pad that I need to replace.
Over the years I have occasionally forgotten to turn the mouse off at night.
Years of the laser LED sitting in the same area overnight....
It ate through the top layer of the mouse pad (tannish-white areas).

My brain told me, but I guess it was wrong again.

Obviously, the mouse needs some variation in the surface when it moves, but I thought it needed more than it actually does.

There is also Logitech "Darkfield" technology that will work off of glass.

I think the OLD (original) optical mice DID need a pattern to skitter across.
I do remember some not working correctly on some solid color smooth finishes.
Maybe the old ones were plain LEDs, not laser.

EDIT: I did find this:
"The key difference between an optical mouse and a laser mouse is their illumination source. An optical mouse uses an infrared LED light to illuminate the surface. A laser mouse illuminates the surface with a laser beam."

Maybe the infrared didn't do so well without a pattern to discriminate movement and laser light scatters with any movement.

I use my Apple Magic Mouse on a plain slick light gray surface with no problems.
I recall when the optical mouse first came out seeing them demo'd on a mirror and plain glass.

I haven't used a mouse pad in years. I just use my desktop. I have had no problems.

I've worn the design off my current mouse pad, and I don't want to wear away the surface of the desk.
