Jetty at Sunrise

This morning there was very little color or light at the beach. Most of the sky was overcast. I took a 30 second exposure of this jetty to make the surf flatten out and to eliminate the detail in the sky and ocean. So, the transition is just color, not any texture or waves. Then there is the mist that is left when the surf crashes against the rocks during a long exposure. I like the sharpness in the rocks and the few highlights visible in the rocks. Nikkor 180mm f/2.8d lens used.

I like this a lot Erich. I played around with the image and found when I cropped out the skyline the picture had a greater dramatic feel to it.

Thank you. I really like to mess around with long exposures. They change so much depending on the light. It was so dark this morning that I did not need any ND filters and still got a 30 second exposure. Sometimes you have to use filters. Because it was so dark, there are almost no highlights and that makes it moody. Thanks for taking a look.

I see your point. I was thinking that it is an interesting transition from the color of the water to the color of the sky. Almost the same. But, you are right about eliminating the sky. It changes the photo dramatically. I'll have to decide which I like best. Thanks for the input. Always a pleasure.

I scrolled the photo up and down to see whether I thought the photo would benefit from cropping out the skyline. You are correct that there is a dramatic feel to it without the sky and brings the rocks into prominence but I like it with the sky. The sky gives the rocks a little more breathing room and I think it gives a feel of "a small piece of a vast world".

It's a very nice photo either way.

I like your interpretation of the photo very much. "Small piece of a vast world" was certainly a thought this morning.

It seems strange to say this; but I think the lack of a great splash of sunrise color is one thing that makes this photo appealing. Ethereal is a really good word for it. Thanks.

I took Dodie’s suggestion and moved the shot up as to eliminate the sky. I find it to be stronger without the sky. The rocks and mist to me are more dominate. Either way I think your trip to the shore was worth it.

That seems to be the general consensus. I was hoping for better light; but you take 'em as they come, I suppose. Thanks for taking a look.

I'm still undecided about the sky. It will probably take me a day or two more before I make up my mind. Thanks, though, for the input.

I truly enjoy this image. The horizon line bothers me. Seems detracting to me. I'd like to see a little detail in the dark rocks, but overall, this is a really stunning image. I look forward to more of your ocean creations.
