Are you thinking that the Nikon 200-500 is the problem? What camera are you using?

"...any ideas?" Yes use a standard troubleshooting checklist.

Did this lens ever work?
Did this lens ever work on your D7100?
If it once worked what has changed since then?
Was it purchased new with warranty?

What firmware version are you using on your D7100?
It should be C:Ver.1.04
Also your Distortion Control Data should be Ver.2.018

Here is a link to download to update your D7100's Firmware.
https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/27/D7100.html
btw, I just check my AF 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR and it works just fine on my D7100 which has the latest firmware.

Please provide more information i.e. answer my questions above...

Happy Holiday Luke!

A suggestion, have you tried formatting the SD card? I do not believe the lens is at fault.
If it is not the SD card a call to Nikon should do.

I doubt it is since all other lens perform ok. It might be something in the interface of the lens that is messing with the shutter speed or closing of the second shutter panel. A call to Nikon is the best route right now, they should be able to have a clue of what may be going on.

Cheers

I fully agree with the suggestion to contact Nikon, but would also suggest that you check to make certain that the lens is mounted properly and securely. Make sure all the contacts are clean. Also make sure that the AF switch on the lens is fully set one way or the other. If the camera is having trouble communicating with the lens, it could interfere with its ability to communicate with the memory card. This is likely a low probability situation, but it's one you can check and possibly remedy without spending any money or having to ship anything to Nikon. They are probably going to want to see both the lens and the camera.

I had a difficult learning experience. I got the 75-300 VR lens who used to have a light pump when I zoomed between 200-300 mm. Later I had to replace the focus engine. I used the 7000 body with this lens. Later the focus engine in the 7000 broke down, in the end two lenses I could use. When I checked in eBay reviews this was common error on this lens and body.
I got the 810 and all lenses I’ve never used on the 7000 worked perfectly.
