I would like to shrink my camera size from a Nikon D90 to a Sony NEX-7. Will I get the same quality with similar lenses? Better?
I think the Sony will be a better camera although I have no experience with interchangeable lens compacts. The D90 is a 4 year old DSLR.

I have the NEX-7 & the 5N. They are both EXCELLENT cameras! I also shoot a Canon 5D MKII & a 7D. Prints at 13"x19" are identical at similar ISO, focal length, etc.
I've had my NEX-7 now for several months. One of the issues with NEX cameras was the lack of lenses. Sony just announced 3 new lenses that fill out the range.
I have been a Sony shooter for years now and am very pleased with both the Sony and Zeiss lenses.
My biggest complaint with both my Sonys was the placement of the movie button. Ah, the latest firmware update added a menu item that allows one to turn off that button.
All in all, I don't think you will be unhappy with the NEX-7
It is no contest - the Sony ! In camera HDR and sweep panorama are game changers. And, you can use just about any lens that has ever been made with adapters for the NEX !

Sony is making a big push in photography by adding little features like HDR, panorama, GPS, and camera manual in the camera. The others will have to play catch-up

Do the lens adapters allow full functionality: focus, etc?

I downloaded the latest firmware version. Where is the option in the setup menu to turn off the video button? I don't shoot much video with mine & I'd like to take advantage of this feature (one UHHr suggested glueing a rubber O-ring around the button. I'd rather do something less drastic).

They allow full manual operation - which for me is preferred ! You actually get focus scales and infinity stops and actually know what distance you are focused at - remember hyperfocal distance ?? Though for crop frame, less meaningful.

Ahh yes, the good old days.
I should have my KatzEye focusing screen tomorrow.
Sony makes some good stuff.
I drive a 2004...oh, wait...that's a Toyota.
To turn off the movie button:
