I know there is more than one way to deal with belt and suspenders to protect photos taken on a long vacation but I am wondering if it is possible to download directly from the camera to a small external hard drive. Currently using Nikon Z5.

Thanks.

No, you have to have a computer in the middle.

I have a 128gb microSD card in my Samsung phone...kind of like a small external hard drive. I can download photos from my Nikon D610 to the phone and easily move them to the SD card...problem solved.

You can also put your sd card into a hard drive for direct copy.

Another way, connect the camera to phone by wifi, transfer the photos to the phone. Using Google photos, Amazon photos etc, transfer from phone to cloud. Some apps, like Amazon photos, can automatically upload from the phone.

B&h photos is a great source of info.

Check out the link below. These little devices aren't cheap but will do what you want.

I have this SSD WD my passport with a SD slot to upload images. I haven't used it much, since I usually bring a travel computer. I would sell it for $200 plus shipping in Cont USA.

**Built-in SD card reader with one-touch copy button
Durable, shock-resistant SSD inside
All-day battery (up to 10 hours) |Based on streaming HD 720p, 3 Mbps video to one device over Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz single band only. Actual battery life depends on file size, type, format, bitrate, devices connected, Wi-Fi connectivity, settings and other factors.
Wirelessly stream 4K videos and view photos with the My Cloud mobile app
Import from USB card readers**

That's what I've done. You can also save all the SD cards and copy the pictures to a laptop.

Good offer, and thank you, but I am going to wait until we see if we can actually resume a foreign travel schedule in 2022.

This is probably the answer. Thank you. I will wait until we see if the Covid situation is such that travel abroad becomes reasonable in 2022.

I use a small tablet with 128 Gb when traveling, added benefit of being able to view photos, email, post to Facebook, etc. They can be had for $100-150, equal/cheaper than an external hard drive.
