When they announced the latest Covid-19 variant, I thought the name sounded familiar. Turns out, it is the name of one of the lenses from my long-gone Chromaga enlarger. It is a nice flat field lens made in Japan for the old Simons-Omega company, the makers of the Omega line of enlargers.

Nowadays, I use it for a magnifying loupe to look at old negatives. I have also used it with a bellows for a makeshift macro lens.

If Simmons was still in business, could they sue the CDC for using their name? Well it was made in Japan- not China

Let's hope they don't name the next variety Nikor!

I've read it somewhere that W.H.O. skipped the letter Xi so as not to annoy Xi Jinping.
Is that the World Health Organization is afraid of China?

And that's a fact, Jack.

Just so we won't get ejected from this section for posting "political" stuff, attached is a quick shot of our CHINA closet. The teapot has been in my wife's family for 90 years.

Well- it's the only CHINA we have- all the rest is earthenware.

WHO skipped Xi because, reportedly, it is a common surname--including that of the current Chinese leader, of course. They also skipped Nu because its pronunciation-"new"--might have been confusing. So they went from Mu to Oo.

Omicron is the company name of one of the largest electrical utility test companies in the world. I do think the WHO should have used Xi as it was next in line. Just a touch of Karma to keep things in prospective.
It sounds as though the symptoms are akin to the normal flu.

Nu was actually next in line. But I tend to agree with you. Trying to avoid confusion (Nu) or possibly offensive naming (Xi) potentially results in more confusion and questions of the "if not that, why this" variety.

As long as you wear a mask when you use the lens you should be OK.

I think Xi would be a most appropriate name for a Corona virus variant.
