I mentioned, in a photo club meeting, that I like to mess around with motion blur and in-camera effects. That led immediately to: "Why don't you do a presentation. I'm sure that we would all enjoy seeing what you experiment with." I should have declined; but I was a fool and said: "Sure". Now I'm struggling with coming up with images for that presentation. I had some, of course, in my archives; but I wanted to be able to explain exactly what I did and what equipment I used. So I'm now in the process of shooting all new images and recording all the steps. More work than I bargained for. Add to that, the fact that many people don't like blurry images and you have a real challenge on your hands. Here are a few that I shot recently.

Used a push pull 70-200 but only used half the range. Processed in LR and PS

Wide angle lens to give room. Camera on tripod moved the camera horizontally twice during exposure. Paused each time to let the image resolve. Effect is multiple exposure with single frame.

This is zoom blur going from 75mm to 35mm. That direction keeps your subject sharper. (Unfortunate halo over building)

I've tried this a few times in the past, not a big fan of its results UNTILL I saw your last image WOW now that is something worth keeping and printing. Something I might try and do with all the Christmas lights around right now. Great job Erich! I give you a big 👏

You definitely need lights of some sort I think. Or bright highlights like on the water. Try zooming in both directions and see which you prefer. Thanks for taking a look.

what a simple tool for interesting manipulation of images to give a range of effects as you have demonstrated to us. I knew about the zoom effect, but like many things we forget about them and they get dusty. Your reminder of what can be done with a twist of the lens is a reminder of a tool we carry with us on every zoom lens.

Thank you for the reminder ebrunner.

I have tried this technique in the past. At least for me it was hit or miss. Certainly more misses than hits. I would say the first two are “typical “ of the final results of lens zooming. Not so for your last one. Just a really wonderful effect was achieved on that shot.

A twist will work, I'm sure; but I usually use a push/pull zoom. I have three that I go to 43-86 (the ok version), 35-70mm and the venerable old veteran 80-200 f/4.5. Thanks for taking a look.
