Zfc self timer question

I had a problem today getting the self timer to function on my Nikon Zfc. I went into the custom menu, selected self timer, set the time at 10 seconds, selected OK and then closed that menu function. But the main menu still showed " ---- " and the self timer did not function. The reference manual (p.355) outlined the same procedure for using the self timing mechanism. Can any of you help me understand if I left out a critical step.

After a little more messing around I did get it to work setting it through the I menu.
