I bought Lightroom outright in 2017. Went to download it in my new computer from my Amazon library and it wouldn't load. Adobe Support told me that version has been decommissioned. Now I have to pay monthly if I want it. I'm no lawyer, but isn't that called " theft."?

I bought Microsoft Office 2013. Contacted Microsoft, " You bought it son, it's yours, here is the download for the new computer."
No problem, but Adobe?

FYI, I desperately needed to a new computer early this year, 2021. Before the new PC arrived I did some planning and research. I gathered up all the install cds I could find. Used a "Key Finder" program I found online to print a list of install keys that software found. I made a backup copy of my Downloads folder and Data Files. I had loads of software, some over 15 years old, for which I did not have cds or download files. Then I purchased a copy of Laplink PCMover, about $50 I think.

When my new PC arrived I installed PCMover on both machines and connected the new one to my network. The program found the programs installed on my old computer and gave me the option to select which ones to move/copy over to the operating system of the new PC. I had a couple small glitches but 95% of the programs I wanted were "moved to my new PC painlessly. Yes, it did transfer all my MS Office and Adobe programs (I have the Adobe Subscription plan). Now I can even play "Transport Tycoon" if I want, even though I don't remember where I got that program.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll do some looking around, see if I can piece it together.
It's not the end of the world, I've had worse.

No. Remember, you do not 'own" the software, you are only purchasing a license to use it. Adobe always has and always will own the software, and you live by their rules, like it or not. Adobe is under no obligation to distribute or support decommissioned software. Microsoft policies are different, since they still support multiple releases of their software. But try and get support/download on old software like Office 2010 - I switched to Office 365 and love it. Better organized and faster.

You're right - you're not a lawyer. But you're wrong, it's not called "theft".

What version did you purchase? Where is your CD and / or download file(s) for the day when you needed to change computers and re-install? There are probably some files available to help or still ways to get the purchased software from Adobe again, but you need to provide more details beyond your complaint post.

I actually found the download file in my downloads on an external hard drive. Would load then come up error like the link in my Amazon Library. I think it's the end of the road for the version. Adobe support walked me through a download, but it would not work for them either. She said that version is decommissioned.

It probably depends on what was in the purchase agreement you clicked on when either purchasing the software or installing it. It was probably a promotional price with limited long term support with limitations on licensing.

These hidden agreements which really are not hidden, are everywhere. Legally was it theft, probably not but the disclosure of terms should have been stated in clear sight when the sale of the software was offered. Unethical is the term that comes to mind both by Adobe and Microsoft.

P.S.: Keep this in mind when you buy digital music or movies on the internet, unlike a record, CD or tape, you only have limited rights that are not for life. It's all in the fine print in the agreement we have to agree to for access.

I feel for you and understand your frustration and anger.

This, " We no longer support" is an interesting hustle. I had to retire a printer and phone because of that. I think I'll sell cars for a living, hit the kill switch after 2 years, then everyone has to come in and buy a new car every 2 years. Amazing business plan.

Fine print IN ALL SOFTWARE:
You purchase the right to use it, not the software. This right is terminated when said software is deemed at its 'lifetime end'. (in computer jargon… When it is not supported anymore)

Only Adobe would stoop that low.

All of the software I am using has a perpetual license including Windows 7, MS Office 2010, Nikon Scan and Capture One. It will continue to work as long as I cank install it.

It will happen to Microsoft Office eventually. Old software just is not designed for new computers. And change is the one constant in IT.

I'm still using Elements 14, however it is no longer supported.
Not sure if the "packed" software package is still in my download folder or not.
If it is, I MAY be able to copy and re-install it on a new computer, maybe.

That's what I did. I found my Lightroom download folder on an external drive ( my main storage drive)
It started loading, then came up error. Good luck with yours.

Windows has a way to use legacy software, but it doesn't work on everything.

I have a Delphi 5 compiler (Object Oriented Pascal) from the mid '90s that I used to use for everything. It still works on my Win10 but the help files lost support a few Windows versions ago and I no longer have the manuals so I have to search online for help. One of the reasons I am switching to Python.

Switching software is not simple. Delphi 5 and Python do things in much different ways so translating can be a problem. You can build new data structures in the new program to work similarly to the way the old program worked or you can try to learn the new data structures. I generally translate, then try to upgrade my brain by learning the new structures.

When I started pixel processing I used GIMP since the price was right. Eventually I switched to Photoshop because it did more then but I still maintain a current copy of GIMP on my computer. The UI is quite different between the two programs so I have migrated toward PS over the years.

No real difference between these two examples and photo editing software. Everyone has a program they've learned and are comfortable with. When it doesn't work any more it is time to bite the bullet and move on.

Still, you didn't answer the 'what version ?' question. V6 is readily available directly from Adobe. I have the original v5 files too from my purchase. Nothing about installing Adobe software is dependent on Amazon, so something is amiss in that path.

Shows as Lightroom 6. Don't know if that is the same as V6?
Went to my Adobe acct. with customer support on the phone with me.
Saw Lightroom 6 there. Would not load from there. Showed something like version inactive or something similar

Use this link to Adobe and right-click and 'save as' the EXE to your local drive. You should be able to save (download), run as an Admin in Windows, and install the software as well as confirm your serial number that exists for your email address in your Adobe profile. Others have reported success with this link within the past 6 months. Assuming you're successful too, save the actual download file for future use. When the install is complete, verify the Help / About menu reports v6.14.

Wow !!! It Worked! Pure genius on your part, thank you.
I actually got to that same download/page earlier today. Don't even know how I got there?
Got to serial # and just stopped. Found serial # now.
Thanks again....
