Just wondering why you would want to soften the background. Maybe just shoot wide open. What were your settings, etc?

It was a 24-200 Z lens. I was at 110mm, which only allowed a f6.3 as low as I could go. It starts at f4 anyway. So I went down to 1/500 at 10000 ISO. I wanted to soften the background because the crowd behind the players were too sharp and distracrting.

I would consider underexposing the photos - darken the background; then lighten the players in post. Just a thought.
Alternatively, you list a 300 PF f4 in your signature. That lens would do a better job of isolating players and blurring the background.
