The clone should 'lift and replace' the pixel content of the source, with just an overlay and some amount of 'blending' at the edges based on the size of the feathering. The heal is similar to the clone, but with more blending of the entire source with the entire target. If the size of your source is much larger than the target, the heal will function similar to the clone in practice, depending on the specifics of the image. Say you're cleaning up dust spots in a blue sky. The heal will work better by blending a blue of the source over the spot and blue of the target. The clone will have to very carefully pick the same blue tone of the source to exactly match the blue of the target. Otherwise, you have a new unmatched blue spot in the sky replacing the dust spot.
Understand but when I try heal only clones?
Have used this function before now not healing just cloning?
Thx

Sometimes I find that when I pick a command after using clone, then adjust the settings for the new tool and try to use it, that the command selection has reverted to clone. I haven't been able to figure out what sequence causes this.

Thanks for that Paul, I was not entirely sure of the difference myself. A very clear explanation you're a great source of information!

Tom, I suspect it may have been screwed up in the latest update. I just tried the clone/heal tool and I now have the same problem you described. I have the latest Abode update for LRC and the heal tool is not working the way it used to. I looked at an old YouTube video demonstrating the difference between clone and heal and my LRC tools don't work that way now. A call/chat with Adobe might be in order.
Thanks to all will call Adobe

I think it's always worked as a cloning tool. That's why I never use Spot Removal in LR. Better to use the Spot Healing Brush in PS, which removes the spot, then samples the surrounding area around the spot and fills and feathers for a seamless result. The "clone" Spot Removal tool in LR is less desirable. It also used to really slow down the performance on an image if you used a lot of spot removal. I haven't used it but I suspect they may have addressed that in more recent upgrades.
Will try photoshop-less comfortable with it- still frustrated as I have used spot removal in LR in past for small spots in sky etc
