IF designs were not unheard of but with AF, IF proliferated as a necessity filtering down even to smaller lenses. Today we expect to see no external motion when focusing (acoarst there’s always a few hold outs). IF helps with weather resistance as well.


A big lens which needs larger motor but also has more room to accommodate a large motor. Still the AF needs to be fast so IF and not well damped focusing were used to allow for fast AF. IF shorten the focal length at close focusing distance.
