Beetle - 4X AmScope Plan Finite Objective

I decided to stage a focus stacking session of a beetle using the AmScope 4X Plan Finite Achromatic microscope objective based on a topic of AmScope microscope objectives discussed on the forum yesterday.

This microscope objective has many good reviews and for the price of $22 dollars, it is pretty hard to beat in sharpness, clarity, working distance. As a finite objective, it is designed to be mounted at a distance measured at 160mm from the camera sensor plane to the face of the objective mounting adapter. This objective has an RMS thread and RMS to various camera flanges or M42 thread are readily available on eBay. Any means of extension such as bellows, extension tubes, or helicoid will work and they need not be expensive choices however all internal surfaces should be as "dead black" as possible for best results so if not then flocking them with self-adhesive felt is recommended. This can be purchased at most arts and crafts stores.

Here's the link to the AmScope microscope objective used for this session:

Very nice 👍👍 Based on this image, I think the 4X would be more appropriate for me than the 10X I have on order. For 22 bucks, can't go wrong, it should screw into the adapter that I'm getting with the 10X. And thanks again for your assistance to me in recent days.

Thanks, RLSprouse. It's about the same price one would pay for a meal with a soda at lunch.

Jackm1943, the 4X is the perfect complement to the 10X. I use the 4X to show a wider field of view and the 10X to showcase a specific aspect like the compound eye or grains of pollen on the reproductive parts of a flower.

The advantage to having them both is that it provides twice the fun..!

An excellent demonstration of what that lens can do! A very good choice of subject that showcases your skills as well.

Thanks ever so much, Mark. I enjoy sharing what can be done quite inexpensively and $22 surely fits that well. As a "PLAN" type objective it has a flat depth of field so its only practical use for photography is focus stacking.

My lessons are learned the hard way for I have bought many microscope objectives for use in my sessions only to find out that they were not worth the box they were shipped in for my use. Photography depends on "reflected light" and not all compound microscope objectives are designed, nor do they work well, with reflected light. They are designed to be viewed with light from below passing through the specimen. It is also very important to know what the working distance of the compound microscope objective is before clicking on the "buy it now" button....as I have done. One of my "bad choices" was a very nice high-quality 40X Fluorescence objective that has a working distance so close that a piece of paper could not fit between the subject and the tip of the objective.

Thanks, Tinusbum. For a microscope objective that can be brought new for only $22, it does a great job of providing a clear and highly detailed four-times magnification image.

Thanks, Napabob. It can go either way and unfortunately for me it is most often the other way.
