warning: political tirade follows
there is a letter which begins, "Dear Mrs. Jones, By now, I am certain that you have been notified of the death of your son Jonny..."
I was in my late twenties when i had to write those words and they haunt me to this day. because after the usual blather about what a great fellow Jonny was, you, the unit leader, have to tell Mrs Jones what you did, or failed to do - the circumstances which resulted in her son's death.
long story short: it's not your fault, but it is your responsibility.
It was in those brief moments when i found out just how heavy those bars can be, and why some times the 'old guys' (the ones who wore the CIB) would sometimes get very quiet. God bless you, First Sergeant, where ever you might have ended up.
I cannot explain in terms strong enough how very important it is that those who we surrender the power to send American men and women into harms way have a visceral understanding of the weight of that responsibility.
You can do what you want - you can write in Mickey Mouse for the US Senate if you want; that's your right, and i have buried good men to defend it.
So I don't waste my vote, and I use it as often as i legally can. And if you can't show me a DD 214, don't tell me about your great plans and wonderful promises about you your administration will restore America, because i'm unconvinced.
OK - that's the tirade
God bless our Veterans……
Those brave who return mentally injured should be treated better than illegal border crossers……
Indeed! God bless this wonderful country who has given so much to so many, including my freedom!
