Leica D-Lux 7 or other small camera

I am interested in a good street/travel camera. I have had 3 medium weight Sony “a” cameras but I have been disappointed with all. For a small camera there are multiple possibilities, but size, weight and good quality are my main requirements. Unfortunately, full frame and a large sensor just add both size and weight, so a limited zoom and a smaller sensor become the only real option.

One of the cameras I have been considering is the Leica D-Lux 7. From what I understand it still has the Leica look and the lens is acceptable. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to get my hands on one, so I am limited to reviews which I never really trust.

Do any of you have this camera? Does it give you the Leica Look (face tone and greens)? Does it feel good in your hands?

I have the 109 and it is an excellent small camera that produces fine results. The color rendition is very good, the monochrome excellent. It is packed with features and complex, so it takes time to learn and or you need to keep the manual handy. It feels like a "real" Leica and is a pleasure to use. I have posted quite a few City photos from it here on UHH, and I always identify the camera I've used. If interested, you can take a look. The 7 should be better.

17MP and 4/3 sensor.
And fixed lens.
If that is OK.
Finally you get the exact same camera as the Panasonic Lumix LX100 unless you are hung up on paying a lot more for the Leica name and wanting it as a status symbol rather than for photographing things.
Remember it is made in China on the same production line as the Panasonic until they put the exterior shell on it.

Check out the Nikon Z50 or Zfc - very good image quality in an affordable and compact camera.

I have the Leica q2 and love it for street photography. The only issue you may have is the it is a fixed 28mm lens. That said, there is an in cropping feature for 35, 50, and 75mm. The camera is a gem, a costly gem but is easy to carry around and with a 48mp sensor takes remarkable photos.

You could compare the Leica D-Lux 7 with the Panasonic LX-100ii which is basically the same camera but much cheaper than the Leica.

Have the LUMIX and happy with it. Why pay more for a little red plastic button?

Olympus OMD Em5 mark ii...interchangeable lenses, but can hang a small prime on it. Avail relatively cheap on the used market. Pany is good to. I cannot quite figure out the attraction of Leica...a lot of squeeze for a little juice IMO.

Look at the Lumix ZS100 20.1 megapixels, 1" sensor, 25-250mm (35mmm equivalent), Leica lens, many features.
I have one and it is a great "pocket" camera.

You might consider the Sony RX100M7. It’s a lightweight compact camera that will fit in a shirt pocket. It has a 1” type sensor and a 24-200 f/2.8-4.5 lens. Focusing is spot on, accurate, and fast with multiple focusing features. It also has a pop up EVF that is useful in bright light conditions that might render the rear screen unusable. And I believe Leica offers the same camera but with their branded outer shell and a much heftier price tag.

Another good one to consider is the Canon G5XII. It’s very similar to the Sony RX100M7, but with a slightly shorter zoom range, 24-120, I believe, and is slightly faster at f/1.8-2.8, giving it an edge in dim/low light situations. It also has a 1” type sensor and a pop up EVF. It’s slightly less compact than the Sony but still light and easy to carry in a jacket or cargo pants pocket.

The Sony goes for $1299.00 and the Canon goes for $899.00.

Look at the Fuji X100V. It’s a 26MP APS-C 35mm fixed lens camera (that also shoots in 50mm and 75mm digitally). It has too many great features to list here, including a leaf shutter for up to 1/4,000 of a second fill flash.

It’s absolutely beautiful, and it’s often mistaken for a Leica. I probably use mine about 80% of the time for all my images.

I have the predecessor model (type 109). I like it a lot. It has a nice zoom range and a f1.7 at the wide end. You can get the same camera made by Panasonic for less. The lens is more than acceptable; it is very good. I have used it for street photos in NYC. This summer I went to Colorado and brought thee Leica. Although I brought a full Fuji system with me, I hardly used it. Don’t get me wrong, Fujis are terrific but I enjoy my Leica D Lux (type109).

One important consideration is the screen. This one is fixed. My Nikon P7800 has a flex screen both tilts and swivels which allows me to take street shots from waist level. This method looks less intrusive depending upon your subject.

i know that there are a couple of models of Leica made like the japan cameras. But there are several models that are true Leicas that are made in Germany. The X2. Q2. Cl. TL2, the M-models and possibly some others that I cannot think of right off hand. Many unique features that are far too numerous to list here, but as an example the TL2 is the only camera I know of that will accept SD cards, but should you forget to bring a card or run out of space it has built in 30gb storage in addition to the SD card slot. The Q2 is pricey but you have built in a lens that retails for about 5 grand. When buy a Leica it has a world wide warranty. I bought my TL2 from a shop in the Netherlands (shipped to me for about $70 dollars, received in three days) and I had a fairly sizeable savings on the camera. I have used most major brands and Nikon for the last 40 or so years. I tried Canon long ago but every time they brought out a new camera, you needed a whole new set of lenses. If I need a long lens then I use my Nikon P950. Otherwise A Leica. Unless you have a lot of spare cash you will not be hauling around a lot of glass.
