New Roku

I'm getting a new Roku - on sale for $20. I was having an awful time watching TV through the Roku, so I disconnected it and used the features of the smart TV. Yes, the problem was with the Roku stick. Unfortunately, streaming with the smart TV is frustrating. It takes almost a second for it to respond to the remote, and YouTube keeps stalling and quitting. Regular TV is fine, but not the "Apps"" features.

Another disappointment is the sound bar I just got a Wohome. Unlike the sound bar on the other TV, I must deactivate the speakers on the TV. That requires going deep into the TV menu and then going through the sound bar menu. Why is it that electronics are getting more difficult to use?

Because they are so versatile...

Because, if it doesn't have a million features available on it, people won't buy it!

I had been using a Roku For some years very successfully. We have a home theater receiver that does the switching among the various input devices, needing only a single HDMI cable to the TV. We were recently advised that Amazon would no longer support streaming with our now old Roku and said we needed to upgrade.

So we bought a new Roku and that did really upgrade our streaming experience in many ways and we are temporarily happy. But then it started to run very hot and kept shutting down. Put a coupe of ice cubes in a bag on top of it to keep it going. Contacted them from the web to return it, as we were unable to talk to a real person. Their policy said I could only return it as defective if I had it less than 30 days and had saved all of the original packaging. They further would not provide a replacement until they had received and checked out my return. Well I was 35 days into ownership and had not saved the packaging, so I was screwed at this point.

Since it only cost $39.00 I ordered a new one from Roku as my best option. If I had purchased the Roku from a retail store they would have likely accepted return of the defective unit, but not when purchased on-line from Roku. So live and learn there.

We have the latest and greatest 4K OLED TV and now have a 4K Roku. So we wanted to enjoy a few 4K programs. But alas the old Sony home theater receiver would not switch or pass 4K signals. It topped out at 1080P. So I had to feed the Roku directly into the TV. Now I must use the wimpy TV speakers which provide awful sound by comparison to the huge stereo speakers connected to the home theatre setup. So I now have a new home theater receiver coming in the mail next week that will switch and pass 4K signals. Had not planned for this extra expense.

I read that Youtube and Roku are feuding over money...that might be one of the issues

One TV on ComCast. No streaming, no pay channels, and perfectly happy.
Old fashioned and like it.
(Remember rabbit ears, test patterns and all went dark at midnight? Not to mention the screen being 12” diagonally, B&W, and the box was the size of a Smart Car.). Yep.

Is there any other reason for businesses to feud?

Our LG OLED is great... except for PBS Passport. No app for that. I'll probably get a Roku for the PBS stuff. But the LG Amazon, Acorn, Brittbox, and Netflix streaming works fine, no issues. The LG sound bar is great too, seems 3 dimensional at times even from old plain stereo sound.

I'm not sure the PBS thing is LG reluctance or PBS reluctance.

We got the Roku Stick awhile back and had problems with it, too, so it was returned and we got the regular Roku with the little black box, and it’s performed well since. We have a Sonos sound system and are very happy with it. It has the sound bar, two satellite speakers and a sub woofer. Everything connects via our home wi-fi system. Our TV is an LG OLED TV, and switching from internal speakers to the sound system is easy. Makes for a nice home theater. The Sonos system wasn’t cheap, but worth every $$ spent.

Cancelled cable, Put up a cheap antenna from Home Depot. Have over 100 channels at no cost. Use Roku for streaming, bought the top of the line because it has a headphone jack and allows you to shut off the TV speakers and listen thru headphones. With my hearing problems that is a god send.
Also bought a "Tablo" box which includes an over the air DVR and a channel guide
