Dragonfly season is coming to a quick conclusion here in Delaware. So, while visiting my G-kids near Austin, TX I had a chance to get together with a few friends and get in two surveys along the Colorado River in Del Valle, TX. (No not that Colorado River.) In this installment I'll show you a Genus of interesting dragonflies Dythemis. In this Genus there are 7 species and they are in the Skimmer family. They spend a lot of time perched, typically on the tip of branches and frequently with their wings angled down and forward and their abdomen slightly raised.

First we'll take a look at my favorite setwing the Checkered Setwing (Dythemis fugax).

Next is the Black Setwing (Dythemis nigrescens).

The last is the Swift Setwing (Dythemis velox)

More to come. Enjoy!

Very well done. I enjoy shooting dragons with my 500 mm zoom at 7' to about 20'. Here in GA, the dragons, exhibit their tails by bringing their wings forward when they are in mating season. Seems an understandable invitation to the opposite sex.

Thanks so much Paul. If you haven't done it already check out the next batch of Ebony Jewelwings and their mating "dance" and wing flapping. I will check out some of your previous posts.

Glad you liked them Ken. It was a fair survey. I was expecting more species to shoot. We had 11 total. More to come.

Thanks so much for the high praise Phil. So glad you enjoyed them my friend and thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment. The light can be pretty harsh in the middle of the afternoon so we basically are out for about 4 hours in the morning and on the lighted side of the trail. If we see a subject on the shady side we have to go with the flash. Yes, I'm approaching the "pro" storage limit on Flickr. If you learned something that's a real bonus for me. You know what they say - "Once an educator........"

Thank you for looking in and commenting Bob. Glad you enjoyed the narrative. I really don't know if most people care or are just interested in the photos since it is a photo forum.
