Today DxO Labs released their latest version of PhotoLab, PhotoLab 5. The two main new features are support for Fuji xtrans sensors and the implementation of Photolab's first version of an integrated digital asset manager. There is also a new Local Adjustments Control Lines feature which works in conjunction with control points. Unlike the graduated filters, Control lines are color sensitive. Control lines and control points can also be used with the new Chrominsnce / Luminance sliders.

In addition, after several years DXO has released an updated version of FilmPack. FilmPack 6 has a number of additional film emulations and other new features.

I’m sorry but the above is full of technospeak. Can you explain PhotoLab 6 in more everyday English? I am a happy user of PhotoLab 4.

I just finished a 30 day trial of Photolab 4. And I just got the email about version 5. It has a lot that I like including the deep prime noise removal. But I am on the fence about making the purchase and using it as my primary RAW converter.

There is absolutely no techno speak in my first post. I'm surprised that you did not understand it especially if you are a Photolab 4 user. All I'm doing is pointing out the new features. It now supports Fuji X-Tran sensors. If you are not a Fuji shooter that's something you don't need to worry about. It now has digital asset management functionality which means it allows you to enter, track and share metadata and keywords. If you do not know what that means you need to look it up. It also has a new control lines tool that works in conjunction with the current control points tools and in addition provides chrominence and luminance sliders to allow you to adjust how how control lines and control points react to luminance and color. I can't make it any clearer than that.

Thank you for that. It is just that I haven’t heard before the PL control described as a ‘control points tool’. I just use the software and don’t worry about the description of what I am doing. But I will say that PL4 gives me all that I am looking for.

Control points and the new Control lines are both local adjustments. Control points, sometimes referred to as U-Points, have always been one of the most powerful and best known tools in PhotoLab. I can only assume that you are a relatively light user of PhotoLab if you are not familiar with this tool.

I think I am quite a heavy user, certainly a moderate user, but cannot see what you call Control lines or points. I have PL4 open at the moment and have had a good look for them. Are they to the left or the right of an image?

They are both options in the Local Adjustment menu wheel.

You are welcome. Keep in mind that the new Control Lines and the associated Chrominance/Luminance sliders are not in PhotoLab 4.
