Devil's Tower

I have been to Devil's Tower several times since about 1993 when I hunted antelope in Wyoming and after filling our tags my work partner and I decided to visit the tower. I have always found it to be a remarkably picturesque area. What's not to love with a towering rock with striations cutting in from top to bottom and is also surrounded by pine forest? But I had never been there early in the morning to capture photos in a completely different light.

So 5:00 AM found me leaving the ranch where I stay and heading toward Devil's Tower, about 1 1/2 hours away. On cue, I arrived at a roadway overlook facing the tower. It was still dark enough to allow me to get out my Sony RX10IV and tripod to be ready when the sun made its appearance to light the tower. I could not be happier. I had never gotten photos of the tower in early morning light. After those photos I drove into the Tower parking lot and began my usual walk around the base of the tower.

I hope you enjoy this series as much as I enjoyed taking the photos. Feel free as always to make any comments.

Dennis

Beautiful. You saved me having to go there myself. I see you didn't take one from the top.

Thank you so much for commenting and taking a look. Do not take my photos for an actual trip. I guarantee every step on the over one mile trip around the base is a photo in itself. These are only a few photos of the tower and surrounding area. You could post 100 different photos if the space was available. Wherever you live it is well worth the trip.

I did run into about 5 rangers touring the opposite direction from mine around the loop. I probably got there a couple of hours before they did as the park was not open when I arrived. I did ask about coffee. They told me they always have a pot going 24/7 IF I was so inclined to climb up and get a cup. As I am afraid of the height I grew up to be I declined and waited until I was in Gillette on the way to the Custer Battlefield before stopping for a cup.

A very nice series! I've not been there, but did pass on a highway in 2009 close enough to just barely make out the tower. That tour visited both Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse, but not Devil's Tower (bummer!).

Thank you angler. For my money it is almost impossible to take a bad photo of the tower. Every step around the base reveals something different, another shadow or spot of light to photograph. This time I saw the mule deer which hang around there all the time but had not shown themselves to me. This time I saw more interesting prayer bags or items left by people tied to trees such as the necklace.

If you ever get to travel to America I think you would love Devil's Tower. If you do get here someday please let me know. I would love to meet you.

Thank you David. If you ever get that way again I hope you will insist the bus driver take you to the tower. It is well worth the trip. I appreciate you taking a look.

Thank you so much tcthome. There are many photos like that of other sides of the tower. I didn't want to bore members with that type over and over. I appreciate your comments.
