I have a friend who ask me to restore an old photo.
I alimented some things that I thought were detracting, and worked with what I had from the original scan.
He loves "Both" of his mothers. The one on the left raised him, and the other is his "Birth Mother".
I made him two 8x10 prints.
I used PSE and ON1 for processing.
He was happy, and that is all that counts!!!
Thanks,
Boone.
Nice crop, handsome color, very clean looking and attractive. Kudos.
Incidentally, thanks for the Before and after.

Thanks for the look. As a portrait photographer, I do of course, do some retouching. However, restoring an old photo
is more time consuming.
But Hey...that's what friends are for!
Thanks for the look!
Thanks,
Boone.
Your statement, "He was happy, and that is all that counts!!!" is all that matters.

Boone, you have eliminated all the clutter that didn't matter and have made a fine portrait for your friend. You are a good friend, using your skills and talents to give him a priceless gift to cherish.
OK. But what did you do? Scan? Re-photograph?
Pretty cool however you did it.
Nice work, especially the crop.

I scanned the photo into my PC. Did the crop first in PSE. Removed some highlights and spots in PSE. Airbrushed most parts, Dodged & Burn as needed. Used ON1 to further develop. Resized, sharpened.
To retouch any old photo is time consuming, and each one is different. Basically, I only work on an old photo for a short time...about 1/2 hour a session. That way I don't start doing some things that are not needed, and my eyes don't get tired.
All retouching is an individuals perception. I try to keep focused on "What needs to be done"! There is no "SET WAY" to retouch any photo...I just follow my own feelings on each one.
Sorry if this is not a "Formula", but I tried to answer your questions as best I could.
And "I thank you for your time and the kind words!!!
Thanks,
Boone.
