Is it because of the edit colorspace?
Is it because of your sharpening approach?
Is it because of your noise processing approach?
Is it because your editor has a lens correction profile for your 3rd party lens?
Is it because your editor operates in 16-bit?
Is it because you can adjust your white balance on a Kelvin scale?

Why are they better?

Wow! You sure have alot of questions here. Yes I like to slightly edit and crop my photos. Yes, I am using a Tamron lens with a Canon. I only asked what most people use. Geeez

I hope you're doing something more than slight edit and cropping, because depending on the software being used, it's not possible for your RAW images to come out 'better' than your JPEGs without addressing the issues raised above...

Well I am a beginner. I am quite happy with my photos. I have won a 2 photo contests online (beginner contests). Maybe I am in the wrong group here. Not use to being jumped all over everytime I post something. 😕

I use RAW most of the time because: I can have more control over noise, pull more detail from shadows, save more detail in whites. I'm color-challenged so depend mostly on the software corrections ("as shot," Auto," daylight," most often) if they look sorta close. Oh, and I avoid JPG "artifacts" which can be a problem.

RAW is simply the raw information your camera collects after taking a photo. It is yours to do with as you please. It is the undeveloped photo with all aspects of development at your fingertips. Remember, YOU ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHER. You may or may not choose to change the white balance, hue, sharpness, saturation, etc., the sky is the limit! Don't let folks tell you that you couldn't possibly be using RAW to its potential because you are obviously satisfied with the photos you took and with the ones you won a competition with. However, look upon such comments as a challenge and not as though someone is jumping all over you because I can tell you that CHG_CANON has only your best interests at heart. I think you'll *get* what he's asking in due course so don't worry about it. Just remember that YOU ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHER...Now, go out there and take some photos!

Everything. Always RAW (+JPEG) in one camera, I like the extra ability when editing the RAW files.
Unfortunately my bridge camera only provides JPEG.

I don't think that Paul was jumping on you, I think he was trying to introduce you to the elements that should be considered when judging your photos. You are a beginner; he, a master. You can learn from the people on this list, but when you ask for opinions, you must be willing to accept constructive criticism, even if it sometimes seems harsh.

I asked a question. He came back with questions for me instead of telling me what he uses and why. I guess I don't fit in here because I am a beginner (2yrs). I use Lightroom for editing which maybe isn't considered (professional editing app). I am also shopping for a new computer strictly for my photography hobby. I also use different lens (Canon, Tamron, Tokina, Sigma). So I intent to take it slow and learn as I go.

EVERYONE was a beginner at some time!

There are a LOT more beginners here that you/we are aware.

AND, everyone has their own desires, philosophy, and methods about photography. Many are also obsessed with "perfection".
The bad part is the members that tell you what you should be doing (usually their way).
Take what people say only as a suggestion, many will be good, many will not be applicable to what you want to do.

Paul is definitely not jumping on you though.

Hang in there... You fit, as well as I. I'm not a "pro" and not obsessed with equipment nor perfection.
My cameras are 11 and 14 years old, I don't use LR, but I have Elements (14 and 19), as well as two other OLD editors. One I'll be VERY few here have heard of or would never consider using...

Yup, a lot of people here have horses taller than mine, and many have excellent suggestions.
