There are so many choices from cheap to expensive remotes and I need help making a good choice.

This came free when I ordered my D5100 from amazon.com.

Seems to do what it's supposed to do; press the button, camera takes pictures.

Thank you, jimoth001, for the info. My camera didn't come with the remote.

Mine either. I bought the $15 Nikon one but see a bunch now as low as $5. I suspect they work just as well.

I use it a lot with my D5100. It came with a little case that I have slipped onto my camera strap so it is always with me. I use both front and rear inputs. I always use it when shooting on a tripod.

I just wish the D5100 would stay stuck on the remote input setting when you turn it off. One UHHer programmed the function key to do it but I use that for ISO.

I am a strong advocate of the Yongnuo RF-603 wireless flash triggers that include the cable for use as a remote shutter release. They are $29 so a bit more than the Nikon remote but they are radio based instead of infrared so they work for 100+ feet if needed. I see it as a win/win providing off camera flash (non ttl) and wireless shutter release AND from what I've read (never tried it yet) you can do both functions at the same time! I have 4 of them for triggering studio strobes and have used them a few times for shutter release with no problems. If they have a flaw it's that the power switch gets covered up when you mount a flash to the shoe - not a deal breaker but worth noting - I suspect the next model will have the switch in a different location. Oh, it also provides a PC port if you need one.

Make your choice on the furthest distance you want to be from the camera and you will be satisfied with your purchase.

molsonice, Your answer made me stop and think about the distance I might be from my camera and why. Very interesting. Thank you.

You can find the cheap imitations for under $2.00, and they have worked fine for me. The picture shows one of those remotes with a cord attached. I removed the battery holder, drilled a small hole through the edge, and ran the cord through it.

jerryc41, Very clever of you attaching the cord. Thanks for your response.

I'll have to admit that I "was" FUBAR when I purchased a wireless remote for my D5100.

As soon as I got it(a Polaroid PL-RMLL3), I tested it and was just the giddy little school boy. It was great!

Then 2 weeks later when I needed it, it wasn't working!?? Well I researched the wireless and found that it was recommended that the 'thin plastic battery contact blocker' be put back into the remote when not in use. I bought a new battery and created a new 'contact blocker' since I had thrown away the original!!

Now even with the new batteries, it didn't work! So now I tried to contact the service number that came with the wireless remote. The phone number didn't work!!!

I verified that the new batteries were charged, they were! I tested the charge on the original battery and it was fully charged! HHmmmm!

The camera was working, fully charged, the remote that had worked, was fully charged and was not being recognized by the camera. My il-logic told me that the remote was bad, so I bought another for more $$$(the Amazon-Basics).

Upon receipt of the new remote, I marched through the instructions as if this was the only(1st) remote. When I was finished, I tested the remote. It works!!!! I was worried that the camera might have had a problem, so this took out the stress that was building up.

I just had to try the original purchase one more time to verify that it was the remote that was bad.

The original worked!!!!!

"My" logic seems to have been failing! That's when I figured out that the shooting mode automatically resets to "S" when the camera is turned on. The 'S' shooting mode tells the camera NOT to recognize a remote's request to shoot.

I now have 2 fully functional remotes and 2 backup batteries(both remotes use the same 'button' battery), and I've learned even more about the D5100.

I'd suggest that you don't get the Polaroid product because they didn't give a valid phone support number.

The Amazon AD for the Yongunow remote doesn't mention the D5100 being supported.

True, bit it does say "series" and looking around at other stores the 5100 is listed. There is also at least one review that cites using it on a 5100:

The RF-603's work great, although the only drawback I found so far is that I can't go as fast as 1/200s (my sync speed on a D5100), I need to go down to 1/160 or so.

A camera I used to own did that, and it was very confusing. Then I figured it out. My current camera has a dial that I turn to the Remote setting. It will stay like thgat till I turn it back. This caues trouble when I try to take a shot with the shutter button, and the camera is waiting for a signal from the remote. Cameras should be smarter. :D
