Most firmware updates I have done on my various makes and models of digital cameras I have, are usually minor improvements or fixes for minor problems.
I always do them, as I want my cameras to be as up to date as possible.
Best thing to do is to see what is being updated in the firmware.
will

Years ago my one of my cameras had an update, it had nothing to do with how I used the camera.
I didn't do the update.
I don't remember ever seeing another update.
(I didn't really look for one either.)

I was always afraid I would mess up my camera if it did it wrong. Can that happen easily? I have a new lens and like you I want everything to work smoothly! Thanks

I do them just because they are there.
Important?
Guess it depends 100% on who you ask.
So bottom line do it if you want or not do it if you do not want to.

It depends on what is in it.
For example, the most common firmware updates fix bugs in the camera operating system.
BUT, manufacturers often add highly desirable features, or improve existing features so they work better.
The manufacturer's web site should list all the changes in each firmware download.
Panasonic is famous for adding many features to their new cameras over the years between a body's release and the release of the next model. I bought a Lumix GH4 with firmware 1.0. It's now on 2.7. It has a lot of new features that weren't ready for prime time when the camera was new, and many features work differently or better now. All my Panasonic lenses have been updated, too!
My habit is to check for firmware updates every few months, and install them as found.
NOTE: The key to a successful firmware update is a fully-charged battery in known good condition, a freshly-formatted memory card, and FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER. Do it wrong, and the camera can become a brick.

If you can read, then you
should be able to update the firmware.

The one I'm interested in is for distortion control. But that's what I'm afraid of ......The Brick!
I don't notice the differences with new firmware update although I would do the update when available. 1 firmware update on my Nikon Coolpix 5000 resulted in significant difference. With the old firmware the camera only shoot TIFF and JPEG. With the new firmware it shoots NEF and JPEG.

Can you read and follow instructions, such as a baking recipe or kid's bicycle assembly? Yes? Then you're good to go. Just go step by step and it will work. I've done Nikons, Canons, and Lumix upgrades. All the procedures are slightly different, but simple enough. I never had a problem, but I'm "by the book" when told to be.

For things like this at least.

For a lot of things, really... I spent much of my career creating training content, standard work procedures, systems... and keeping IT departments honest.

To answer your question specifically...the latest functional firmware update for the D500 allows you to use CFExpress memory cards in addition to QXD cards. Distortion control updates usually add support for new lenses.

Doing firmware updates on your camera is easy as long as you follow the instructions set out by the manufacturer, exactly as it says to do.
I have done updates on about 5 of my cameras and have never had a problem.
Have updated some more than once.
Fuji does some of the best updates IMHO.
