I don't know who started this ridiculous rumor that autonomous cars would be driving everyone around within 10 years. Total BS. I or anyone I know would never set foot in one. Makes good headlines and clickbait though.

Here we have AI software at work:

150km/h is about 94 miles per hour...

It's an inevitability...so my opinion one way or the other is moot.

AI driving already has a lower rate of accident than the general public.
Which means even if there are glitches right now...it would still be safer for you if they were 100% in place...than driving with people in control.

I have real trouble believing that, at least for now! I also have to agree that "Auto-Pilot" is currently just another excuse for the actual driver to not pay attention. There are way too many technology type distractions as it is and I find this to be a very bad thing. I really think we need to get some legal guidelines in place on the proper use and the responsibilities of using this type of software on our public roads and highways. If this is really the wave of the future then we need to prepare our legal system for it as well.

Personally I think it's a bad idea. We keep looking for ways to escape responsibility. We need to be responsible for something. Drive safely and watch out for idiots.

The law says regarding this new technology that you MUST have your attention on the road (no distracted driving such as texting while riding these vehicles). You must have your hands ready to take control of the vehicle. It is clear to me that in the instance of rear ending pull-overs that the person behind the wheel was not minding his vehicle. There might be some minor problem with the software but there is no excuse for the person behind the wheel for distracted driving.

Agree, but as others have said, if you don't need full attention, as in doing the driving, your attention will not be there, just keeping hands on wheel, etc. is just too boring. Either drive or not, or just have as a warning or override if you fall asleep, etc.

Think about a GPS on your current car that forced your car to NEVER exceed the speed limit. YUK!
The road in front of my home is 25 mph, and no one ever goes that speed, even if the cops are behind them. This technology is simple and GPS's already knows the speed of your car and the speed limit. Personally, I'd hate that, and I seldom speed anymore. Many speed limits are there to collect taxes rather than safety. I guess with a fully automated car, one could PhotoShop their photo's instead of being bored to tears running around 20mph under a safe speed.

The fact that the law requires the driver to maintain attention and take over makes it obvious that self driving cars aren’t ready for prime time. The main issue is that judgement and anticipating future events is very complex…and while it can be accomplished by AI…the computer resources required are tremendous and not inexpensive…nor is the software development and testing required… it to mention that modeling every possible situation simply isn’t possible. That’s where human judgement comes in.

Robots can do a lot of things…but doing them well in all circumstances is exceedingly expensive.

Who wants to get into a car, push a button, and sit back like you are in your easy chair. Not me! Give me a car with a 4-5-or 6 speed shift, and let the fun begin! That does not mean going 100 mph on some back road. Just the pure enjoyment of the experience of driving the way it was meant to be.

Anyone seen any statistics on accidents and deaths per mile driven for these cars versus non-auto pilot cars? Any death is bad, but we do kill some 30,000+ already, 60,000+ when I was a kid.
Finally this one occurred in a city and, as I understand it, Fed does not recommend any use there, only Testla does it, other cars do not.

Isn't Musk the same person that has repeatedly warned people about the danger of AI?

I have this in my model 3 Tesla. I tried it out on Rt 75 in Naples, and quickly shut it down. I wasn’t convinced that it was safe, at least not under those circumstances. I would use it in an emergency, if that was my only or best choice.
I just drove it from Naples to Hewlett L.I. There was no problem charging the car, so range anxiety is non existent. However I will never make this trip again, because the traffic (North Carolina, Virginia, NY) is so bad. We spent far more time in stop & go traffic than charging.
My wife and I love driving the Tesla, as does everyone I know that has one, or who has tried driving one.
However, you need a home charger, or it isn’t worth it. With solar power, you can drive on sunshine, which is as cool as it gets.
