How clearly do the mirrorless cameras show the image on their screens in bright sunlight? Direct light on my Kindle, automobile GPS, etc., wash out the screen.

Same except Kindle and GPS lack an EVF. So, if your SLR displays image playback, histogram, menus, etc, etc all through its eyepiece, you should just stick with that.

Although the EVF isn't a requirement for being a mirrorless but almost all of them do have it. If you can only view the image with the screen then what's the different between mirrorless and DSLR?

Size, speed, accuracy, silence, battery capacity, group identity, etc, etc. Most important for many users is that SLRs have sufficient pinky room on the grip.

uh, the mirror?

A mirrored camera used in live view cannot touch a mirrorless camera's performance.

There are many cameras without mirrors that aren’t designated mirrorless; e.g. phones, tablets, point and shoot, and bridge cameras. So I think that distinction is like calling modern autos crankless: meaningless.

The replacements for DSLRs all have EVFs. A better name might be “EVF cameras”. Alas that can include some point and shoot and bridge cameras. But it better highlights one huge advantage of the modern replacements for DSLRs.

The EVF provides one of the most evident advantages of the new cameras. Advantages include “what you see is what you get” and the ability to display alternative info such as focus peaking and menu and image viewing in bright light.

The new cameras are significantly smaller and lighter than most counterparts and the Nikons add a new mount enabling faster lighter lenses.

Other ideas for a better name?

There are many cameras without mirrors that aren’t... (show quote)

By way of shunning the popular stoopid term, I was calling them “LV cameras” but recently have switched up to “EVF camera” myself.

Historically, camera genres were named for their viewing and focusing systems.

Naming a camera genre by referencing the absence of the viewing system from an unrelated genre is just further proof that “You can’t fix stoopid” :-(

If I’ve offended anybody, please realize that altho it’s not personal it is, OTOH, quite intentional !

MILC is a common designation. Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera. Differentiates them from phones and point and shoots.

In bright sun, I revert to the EVF. On cloudy days, my OLED touch screen is fine. I set my viewfinder sensor to switch from OLED to EVF when I raise my camera to my eye. I don't ever think about it unless I have to work low or above my head.

When you buy a mirrorless camera, look for one with a FULLY articulating OLED touchscreen display. You'll be very glad you did! I'm currently doing a ton of work on a copy stand. Being able to sit down in front of the camera and do all my work on the OLED display is priceless. It takes all the back strain and neck pain out of the job of copy work!

You can call various camera types by the most accurate terms. Common usage will prevail, even if less than accurate. Don't be surprised if using the accurate terms leaves you talking to yourself while everyone else is scratching their head wondering what the heck you are talking about.

Uh huh. True but not really news.

Even if it never replaces “MILC”, “EVF” communicates well cuz everyone [who matters] knows what an EVF is.

“MILC” can also be a Leica M4, a Crown Graphic, etc (as our nerds never fail to point out). And “LV” could refer to any LV-capable SLR etc. But “EVF” is neatly unambiguous and widely understood. That makes me like it, and so I prefer using it.

Such usage also labels me as a rather stubborn iconoclast, so I don’t need to explain myself or provide my resume.

A lot of cameras have an eye sensor switch so you can review images in the viewfinder. Once you put your eye to the viewfinder, it will switch from back screen to viewfinder for viewing the images. Some allow one to turn off the back screen and just leave the viewfinder on. Always one's choice of how to view the images.

I believe my bridge camera is not the only one with an EVF besides being mirror less. No interchangeable lens though.

Look into the EVF.
