Nikon's financial position seems to be improving!

Based on an article published online a little earlier today by Digital Camera World, Nikon's first quarter 2021 financial results were much much better than expected. That is good for Nikon and the camera industry in general. I've always been a Canon shooter but purchased my first Nikon a few days ago, the new Nikon Z fc retro mirrorless camera.

But how could that be? So many here say their new offerings are sub par and they are going under!

PS: And it is true all of their leading and new items are on backorder.

Actually, the Z fc itself is not on backorder. The body is currently available, as is the kit with the 16-50 lens. What is on backorder is the kit with that body and the new retro Z 28mm f/2.8 prime. What is also on backorder are spare batteries for the Z fc and Z50.

Nikon has had a problem with battery production for months. Not just the Z50/fc. Wonder what causes it?

Actually the article came out a few days ago. I posted the link in the "Links and Resources" section. This post will most likely be moved to the proper section.

I was told that the battery had a chip inside and the chips are in very limited supply.

Chip supply remains a problem across many industries. Anyone know why the shortages?

I read that as Covid was peaking the first time many operations were shut down. They thought the world economy was going to shut down. Many businesses that use chips bounced back faster and stronger than expected. Apparently you can't just turn a switch on and be running up to speed.

I don't know this as fact, just something I read on the internet.

Thanks. My research showed similar…that Covid increased the demand for consumer electronic chips as people hunkered down and other demands such as autos and likely cameras and their components withered, and now the chip makers are slow to reverse their retooling…and they can’t increase supply to meet the new demand.

Consumers benefit when manufacturers have good and profitable competition. It drives innovation, fair pricing and better customer service. Customers do not have as many benefits when there is no competition to their goods and services. If you ever doubt this....just stand in line at the DMV and you will see why.

In marketing, a good ploy is to make what is wanted hard to get. It generates a buying frenzy when a few get released! I remember about 28 years ago when we had to have a Cabbage Patch doll for my 8 year old. No one had them. One day it was announced Target had gotten a supply. About 300 people lined up to claim the 48 dolls they got in. We were lucky enough to grab two -- one for each of our daughters.

I remember when the D800 came out it was like that. I suspect it will occur with the Z9 too.
