My Parents were divorced when I was 4 or 5 years old.
My father won custody. He remarried when I was 9
My stepmother systematically tortured and subjugated me
while my father watched on and laughed. I lived a nightmare and wanted to be dead
every day of my life from 9 to 15 years old.

"As a child" my "little corner was" far from safe, my parents were as far from "there to support and
protect" as could possibly be. However I know the world was a better place 60 years ago.

60 years ago one did not worry about locking doors or having children walk to and from school.
Now allowing a child to walk a couple of miles to school is at best irresponsible and
one does not leave home without locking the doors... and that's barely the tip of the
iceburg.

I think kids had more real fun in those days than they do today. An overweight kid in those days was a rarity. We were all too busy playing physical games and climbing trees, burning up calories. The snacks we had were popcorn, fruit or celery. No chips, candy or ice cream. Chips were for special occasions like picnics, and ice cream was for your birthday. You never see kids out playing today. The only time I see kids is when I go to the grocery store, Walmart or Target.

For sure I am old! At almost 84, I remember every bit of that. Sometimes the simple things in life are our most pleasant memories. For instance: When I was young, we had no air conditioners, so, at bedtime I sprinkled my bed with water and a drop or two of cologne mixed in it from one of those coke bottles with a stopper that had holes in it. (my mother used it to sprinkle clothes when ironing. There were no steam irons) Anyway it cooled my sheets and felt so nice but the best part was, there was a HUGE Gardenia bush right outside my bedroom window (Birmingham Al) with hundreds of blooms and I fell asleep with that sweet smell every night. When I married and then moved to Tn, Gardenias were not hardy there. I lived there all my adult life wishing I had a Gardenia bush. After my husband passed away, I downsized, moved back to Al. and now I have TWO Gardenia bushes, both blooming. Not a fancy memory but I'm loving it.
PS: My first Gardenia bush here was the very first thing I purchased after I moved here.

Well there's one thing we all didn't have fond memories of when we were kids...
That would be a global pandemic that's killed 4 plus million so far.

I believe if the global population was currently 2 billion (instead of 3 times that, as it is
at the present you think is so great) There would be no covid 19, no clogged roads
and and probably no school yard massacres.

The fish that no longer exist in Port Phillip bay would exist in numbers that would stagger
ones imagination.

Even as late as the 90s I could catch more fish in four hours than
what I can now catch in four days in Port Phillip Bay,
the bay upon which my home city of Melbourne resides.

Which of course is a product of the current human population of the planet;
TODAY as wonderful and better than the past as JREIPE would have it in this lovely virus infected
planet that is overrun with 7.9 Billion* souls now .

that gradually reducing the population by
encouraging couples to have no more than two children,
rather than reducing the population by disease would be more humane
than propagating a widespread plague... possibly with penalties
for those creating vaccines lol.
